"Ugly" or "nice" landing page templates?

Going through various products to promote on either CB or JVZ I am baffled how many landing pages that are these miles long and extremely ugly pages. I would guess that the reason for these landing pages look n feel are because they convert better than even nicer ones? But is that really why? Or is it just because product owners don't want to spend either time or money to develop nicer design or purchase nice templates?

I know from which landing page I would by from, and that is from the professional looking one!

What's your thoughts on that?

    People like things that look good.

    In many cases, your latter assumption would be correct for the most part.

    There are many people who focus on quantity rather than quality, owning many products and thus failing to dedicate enough time to properly execute effective marketing of each.
