I am seeing popular premium WordPress themes and wondering if popular themes should be avoided due to one reason - security. Everything that is popular gets attention good and bad but in case of WordPress themes I think it's attention of spammers and hackers. Am I correct? What else can be expected with popular theme? Bots that waste bandwidth and load server?

I also think due to reasons above popular themes get updated frequently. Previously theme updates could mean either successful and unsuccessful update where new version messes up website. Apparently today it's different because there's a Child Theme that each theme can have and it isolates modified files from main ones in order to no cause any conflict next update takes place.

It also seems that with premium popular themes it's better to opt to pay subscription fee to be receive updates. I remember a few years back you could wait 6 months before updating to new theme and be okay but with all the buzz WordPress received with time it seems updates are imperative today? Imperative unless I buy non-popular theme maybe...

When I talked about free themes, I did not have in mind themes from lesser known sources.

Take Storefront theme from WooThemes for example. They are one of leaders in theme development and majority of what you said above would not be appropriate for them.
