Basic Question - URL format for articles & forums

Hi,

I think this is a really basic question but I don't know how to fix it and it is driving me up the wall.

What is the difference between using h*ttp:// with the website name and .com as opposed to h*ttp:// www and the website name and .com? (Sorry for the strange formatting, I can post links hence the *)

Ezine Articles outlines that the first format is correct but in my case this format goes to a Go Daddy holding page. By inserting the www the link does go to the correct page.

The domain address is hosted with Go Daddy and linking to a Typepad blog.

Thanks for your help. It is very depressing to have your first article published and then find it is linking to a holding page

Hi, Manda. Your question is understandable. Most web hosting accounts get set up by the hosting company so that both forms of URL point to the same site, and it doesn't matter whether or not you include the www segment.

This sounds like yet another one of GoDaddy's unusual practices, and a good reason not to use them for web hosting. But since you are using them, I think the quickest way to get a resolution would be to contact their tech support department. Just tell them that you want your URL (first format) to redirect to your URL (second format). They should be able to set that up for you simply and quickly, or at least tell you how.

If I knew how to do it using the tools GoDaddy makes available, I'd be glad to tell you how to do it yourself. But I don't have any hosting accounts with them and I'm not familiar with their tools. Maybe someone else will jump in here and fill in the gap.

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for your very helpful response. I had no idea where to go and freaked out a bit after finding my first article linking to Go Daddy.

Once you told me where the problem was I sorted it out using my account management at Go Daddy setting up a forward for the address without www which seems to have fixed the problem.

Talk about a trap for young players :-)

    Thanks again
    Manda
