Do I develop this site or not!!

I thought of jumping into the domain-name trade business and bought a domain name. I put it up for appraisals in Namepros.com and my domain got some(all, in fact) negative responses!!!
my domain is called twitypedia.com I thought that since twitter and wikipedia are two of the most used websites, I could join them and get a good price for it!! but the guys over there told me that although it sounds right, its useless...... is it??

So my question is.....should I go about developing this domain as a wordpress blog with all cool stuff about twitter and put up some affiliate links to twitter and other social networking related products?? or should I try putting it up for sale somewhere........those guys at namepros said, that unless someone really has content related to twitter and hasn't already made a website, I wouldn't fetch a lot of money for the domain.....but if the guy does have twitter-related stuff, he could pay me a good amount.....
I'm considering putting this domain for sale over here, in the WSO section. Tell me if this is allowed??(and for that matter, also tell me how to get about with the sale....because I don't know s**t about how to sell a domain)
If you're telling me to develop this website, also tell me how much time it would take me to get back my investment of 9$...............that's a whole lot of questions you've got to answer!!

Listen to those at NamePros.com, they are very right. Unfortunately the domain doesn't make much sense.

    Also:
the domain infringes on two different trademarks (but of course even one TM infringement is enough to get the domain taken off you)

Don't try developing it, please also don't try sell it onto someone else - it's still a domain registered in bad faith. The best thing to do is delete it or just leave it and then hand it over to Twitter/Wiki if/when you get a C&D letter.

Note the thing in bold - just because people here know less about domains, that doesn't mean it'd be good to sell it. It's still a bad faith domain and so selling it would be like selling someone faulty goods.

EDIT: Hmm, on reflection it's less straight-forward than I thought. I still think it was registered in bad faith since it was registered to profit off of the Wikipedia and Twitter brands. However it's more of a gray area since the exact TMs are not in the domain. But I still would err on the side of caution and not use this domain.

Twitypedia... Well, conjoining the names of two completely different websites is useless. Especially something like that.

Most people don't create wiki sites unless there are walkthroughs, guides, tutorials, tips, etc for a certain thing. I.E. For the game World of Warcraft, there's wowwiki.
This site tells you everything you need to know about the game and even adds extra content on top of that.

Having a wikisite for a useless social networking site such as Twitter has no point. Pretty much the only "content" you can add for Twitter is how to create an account, how to follow people, get followers, and delete.

I call Twitter a "Useless" social networking site because it has nothing to do with Wikipedia in any possible way.

I don't see any usefulness out of a domain like that... however, if you DO imagine to come up with content for something like that, you'd have to build it's reputation. If you try to sell it now, it will be worthless and nobody will want it. If you build a reputation for it, give it a really good name, you can probably sell it for a price around the $20-50 area.

I don't mean for any of this to sound rude, just throwing in my two cents.

Wait.. what? People create sites with trademarked names all the time and most companies don't care. As long as the information doesn't go against their policies. There are millions of fan sites out there for other sites around the web and I'm MORE than positive not all of them asked for permission to use them or got in trouble by using them.

What I say is completely true, I know it sounds odd though

It's not common and you are quite right that people do happily own/run sites using the TM/branding of a company in their site's name, however the company could technically take action if a domain using a TM was registered after the TM's registration.

Such cases aren't common since a UDRP case costs $4,000 to file (but a C&D is free to e-mail of course), but I'm just pointing out the legal truth here

There's a good chance that the owner of this domain wouldn't get in trouble for it, but they *could* since - as I say - it's registered in bad faith via usage of a built up brand.

Also some companies persue such things much more than other companies.

For example if you register a domain with "ebay" in it then there's a very good chance that you'll be contacted about it (via a C&D) since eBay are very aggressive when it comes to following such things up.

As I say, it's not all too common but it *is* the law and it is sometimes best to err on the side of caution.

I don't get the bad faith issue on this. Wikipedia would have no leg to stand on - are they going to go after encyclopedia.com too? And there are plenty of Twitter-related websites with the word twit in them, not to mention sites that have nothing to do with Twitter.

I actually think it COULD be developed and sold, although probably not for all that much. The problem I see is the spelling. If I'm looking for a site whose name sounds like Twitter's, I'm going to input the address as twittypedia, not twitypedia. Then again, I know how to spell...

Go for it, Sidd. Just don't invest too much money. And see if you can get the correctly-spelled url.

OMG!!! I never knew I'd be infringing any copyright, I swear!! And I didn't even intend to sell it over here thinking that some people over here aren't that aware about domaining, which is why I asked you guys!!
And as Waloosh said, millions of websites are built on the net which are infringing copyrights, like wowwiki itself, or wowhead, both contain references to wow..........ohhh!!! I get it! wow isn't a registered trademark maybe.....right?

I wouldn't worry too much. I still think it *could* be a risky name, although clearly it's better than something like "TwitterLinks.com" (etc). So sorry if I worried you, that wasn't my intention. It's just that I've seen such names warrant C&Ds hence I tend to personally be very cautious with such names.

But you never know, it could be different enough from both brands to not warrant any trouble, I could easily be wrong - it has happened before :

Cool!! Aronya, that's exactly what the namepros people said. They said the name sounded nice but the spelling would have been better if it was twitipedia or something like that because that's what the people are going to type.
Thanks for the encouragement, I think I'll go for it as long as somebody else doesn't come up with the copyright issues.
BTW Waloosh, I chose Twitter and wikipedia because I'm about to build a site that's gonna be like a wiki for new guys in social network marketing. I hope you approve of this concept........its relatively new, but its HOT!!!

Not a good domain, the people at Namepros have appraised it correctly. I'm afraid you lose $9 here. If you are short on ideas for a domain name, there are websites which suggest you domain names. One such site is Freshavails dot com. I'm in no way affiliated with the site but the example is to just give you an idea.

    Hi,

I would question why anyone would be interested in a site bearing such a name.

I just cann't think of a reason to type the combination of these two words.

I would listen to the people that are in the business and chaulk it up as a learning experience.

I learned the lesson but I'm now thinking of what I can do with this stupid lil' domain. I'm not gonna just leave it like this, am I?? That would be a stupid thing to do.....right? I've bought the domain for two years. So I'm looking to make at least 10$ in these two years to cover up the money I spent.

    Hi Sid
well you own the domain name, you may as well do something with it. I have over 170 that are waiting for something to do, as I have time I set up a site and sell the domain with the content or I just sell the domain name.
    • set it up as an affiliate site, using other products to sell, just set up a simple site or put yet another blog online and do product reviews. use the right meta tags and the whacky domain name won't matter
As far as selling, don't overprice it. the keywords in the name aren't all that, but if you develop a site that is even bringing in just 10/mo you can keep it or sell it with the content and have added value to the domain name.

I'd recommend not trying to sell it as is.
Just today I sold a domain name for 2500 that I bought 4 yrs ago for 8.00. Sometimes sitting on a domain name with little or no content on the site,or any site at all can bring something back. With yours, content will be king..so get going on it.

Be patient, don't get discouraged by the 'pros'. Look at sitepoint forums, you can see there many people are looking for sites that are bringing in minimal income, so hang in there.

Thanks a lot!! Now I'm all fired up!!! I'm going to Wordpress and registering a new blog under this domain name, and filling it up with affiliate links!
erm.........what the hell is meta tags! I think I've heard the word before. It has something to do with what the search engine will show under my site name right??
How do I make sure I have the right meta-tag? How on earth do I change it?
