I am planning on hiring a website designer to create a simple product sales page with FAQ, Contact, etc.

Based on these websites I like, what kind of designer with what kind of knowledge and experience should I be asking for?

Sites I like:

Ego — You're important.
freckle: time tracking rethought
Dry Erase Paint for Work, School and Home White Boards| IdeaPaint

I like the simplicity, large font, and "woven" look and feel to these websites. So what type of designers should I be looking for and recommendations on where to find these designers would be helpful.

Your best bet is to look at designer's online portfolios, and find one that contains work similar to the style you're looking for. Not the best answer I know, but it's quite hard to find the few designers who can provide such a high level of style.

That way, you can be confident that you'll get the right design.

In terms of a specific skillset, most web designers will use Photoshop / Fireworks to produce JPG / PNG mockup designs, to show the look and feel of the site. They'll also code in HTML and CSS, ensuring cross browser compatibility.

If you're looking to use a specific Content Management System, such as Wordpress, you're best to find a designer who has experience with that CMS. It means they know the necessary steps involved to make sure the design works with that specific CMS.

If you're looking for specific, bespoke functionality on your site, you'll probably want to also get a web developer to then take the HTML / CSS design template and create your web app / specific functionality.

Some designers are also developers - it depends on who you work with.

    Hope that helps.

      Hi James,
Just some friendly advice if I may. Never ask a potential client to look for your portfolio, always make it easy for them. Use real language, not "cool i m also .." and so on.
Consider putting a link in your signature instead of all the text to nowhere, it will help promote your work.

All these sites have a specific feel and look. They're simple and they have large fonts and are very clean. Other sites are simple and clean but don't look nearly as good. Is there any type of programming language that separates these sites from the rest (like ajax or ruby on rails) or is it just better designers?

Also don't post your services if you can't create a site that resembles these. Not saying you guys can't because I couldn't find your websites w/ portfolios!

Like others mentioned, check out portfolios, you can visit elance.com and see many over there, post your project and see what you can find.
the best thing you can have is what you have now..sample sites. MANY people have no idea what they want, or they know what they want, but for some reason never tell the designer, despite us asking.
knowing what you want, style you prefer and so on will always save you time and money.
Also know what features you need such as ability to update the site yourself, specific tools needed for your visitor,do you need hosting, what kind, how much. Sometimes a designer is not a developer/programmer and you may need someone else to develop specific features.
It also helps to know what you do not want.
So, kudos on knowing what you like and not hiding it, you are on your way
