Need advise on my site.

Hello, my website is Discomfort Free

I have been a massage therapist for over 18 years. Basically the intent of this was to post self-help techniques for people with numb hands from repetitive use from their occupation or hobby to prevent, relieve, reverse and even eliminate Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or false carpal tunnel syndromes. These are based on techniques I use to keep my own hands working well. Several of them I developed my self.

Eventually I want to create a product - but for now this is free information.

I could really use advise or comments in ANY of the following areas.

1. Layout. I really like this Wordpress theme. But I think I goofed in making a static home page. The reason I did this was because was getting hits with just the right keywords that just bounced off. But I think I should rename the "Home" page and not make it static because it is mentally interfering my making new posts. I haven't posted in months and feel I would like to go off on tangents (like commentaries on other health related issues).

2. I want people with the problem the site was intended for (those with carpal tunnel or numb hands from any of the false carpal tunnel syndrome) to be directed somewhere.

I'm not sure the best way to do that -- I know those big bold red letters are ugly.

Perhaps I should...
3. Change the opt-in form to something less lame than just asking to be told when new info is added. I think instead of trying to direct people on the site - just develop a report in a series of emails.

4. I get in my own way mentally. I do want to develop a paid product, but I keep hearing that you shouldn't develop an untried product and you should get experience first as an affiliate. Therefore I have wasted a lot of time on niches that have a lot of affiliate programs - but spend too much time researching the product and often I find that either there is a much better product for the price that I don't have the traffic to be an affiliate for, of that I can get the same thing for free. So my focus gets scattered all over the place and not at all on this.

Just when I think that making a self-help product is a waste of time, someone will post a comment on the site or on youtube (discomfortfree) or email me thanking me for helping them.

By the way, I don't think that there is much searching for self-help techniques for carpal tunnel and other causes of numb hands. But the problem is HUGE among so many occupations and avocations.

Anyway, thanks for listening.
I'm a confused lone wolf.

Hilma

There are more experienced and knowledgeable marketers here and hopefully they'll chime in.

    Here's what I think

    1. Layout- I think that once you decide what you want the site to be it will be easier to decide on a layout. For the moment, as a pure informational site (not promoting your product or affiliate products) the layout is fine. If you decide to create a product or promote an affiliate product you can use the videos that you've created as an incentive to get prospects to subscribe to your list. You can actually keep the copy on the home page and add an opt in box to capture e-mail addresses.

In my opinion your blog is too busy. They're are too many things happening on that page. Move the archives, categories, recent posts to the right side of the page. That tag cloud is distracting. Can you make it smaller, remove it or do something to tone it down?

    2. I'm not sure what you mean when you say you want people to be "directed somewhere". If you decide to market a product you want to funnel people to your opt-in.

    3. For your opt in form text how about something along the lines of "Got Carpal Tunnel Pain... You can locate and eliminate the pain with a few simple exercises" or something along those lines.

    4. There's no reason why you can't develop your own product. You know this problem exists, you know that people suffer from it and you have a solution. You might want to think about developing a product and delivering in a micro-continuity format. As far as developing a product, do not sell the information and knowledge that you have short. It's common to do this so nip it in the bud now.

On the marketing front you can choose different sub sets of people who suffer from carpal tunnel such as secretaries, tennis players, etc. The solution for the problem is the same (so you don't need multiple products) you'll just need to approach each group a little differently.

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions fell free to send a PM.

      Thanks Kevin,

I appreciate you taking time to reply.
(I'm not getting that quote thing to work)

      1. I think I can find some way in the style sheet to tone down the tag cloud.

      2. What I mean by "directed somewhere" is that...
Before I made the home page static, there was no connection between the posts except the tags.
Now (with the static home page) if I make a post, the post gets lost to the archives.

The thought that just came to me is to change the Home page to a video of what they get in the free report (series of emails which I have not developed). And then let everything else go into the archives. (There's probably a better way of saying that.

      3. Good idea.

      4. Thanks for the encouragement.

While a micro continuity site would allow me to make things up as I go, I'm not sure if you can clickbank it. ?? ANYONE KNOW? I was thinking of a password protected site, since there would be a lot of short videos.

Then for marketing, I was thinking that advertising in various niche ezines might be one way to go. JV alao (but I need to learn how to do that). Anyway have to get a product together first.

That's a very informative site you've got there. Being a person with most all of the symptoms you talk about I found it very interesting to say the least.

I did want to point out that for some reason my Firefox browser didn't load it correctly. Your post box running down the center of the screen actually went to high and covered up half of your header.

Might be something in the code that Firefox doesn't like.

My right hand is so numb I can hardly type, I better get back to your site and do some more reading!

        Good Luck and thanks!

Mmfh: Thanks, hope this can help your hand problem. I'd start with the hand, wrist and forearm videos.

Yeah yesterday I was dinking with the code and finally got the tag cloud fonts smaller, but then I lost the opt-in box. I had a heck of a time putting it back without messing up the layout. I moved it to the left side. (try refreshing just in case you came in when I was messing with it). It looks okay now on Firefox to me, but I will now try different screen settings to see how it looks.

Try mixing it up a little bit with color and maybe a custom simple logo? Blue links are good to know that they are links because they stand out, but at the same time, they aren't very attractive. Also, your content area seems rather smashed between two over-powering columns. You might consider adjusting the margin and padding to create more white space. Also, Im not sure what the blue stripe is down the sides.

The original template had red links and I hated those. The stripe has something to do with widgets in the template. I can probably get rid of it. Where there is no stripe, I didn't add the stuff as widgets.

I use a screen resolution of 1024/768 and the collumns looked okay to me. But I switched to a higher resolution and I see what you mean about the side columns. I like the template and the center column. Perhaps there is a way to narrow the side columns and have a background to the far sides.

I have to think about color.
