I own a pair of websites, as they are old am thinking to redesign those. But am afraid that those may break down completely if i try to do so[once it had happened when i upgraded ]. Is there any precautionary measures that i can follow to avoid such a serious issue??? Thank you.

This could sound obvious. But, I would suggest backing them up prior to making any changes. Your choices may vary depending on which platform your sites are built on.

    Cheers!

    Hi hariandro,

As long as you update the design, not the content or link structure, you should see very little impact on the search engine rankings.

As far as the website breaking because of mistakes by you or the web developer, that is a different matter. You could do everything on a new hosting account and make sure it all works properly before migrating. Or just use best practices for development and backup the old version of the website to make it easy to restore.

You cannot let fear make your decision for you, be brave, but also be smart. Prepare for the worst by doing a complete backup and test the backup to make sure you can restore it on another web host. Then you can proceed with confidence that you have a backup at the ready in case of a major error on your development process.

What platform are your sites in? Do they have databases? Plain HTML?

Actually rebuilding website is not a big deal, if you follow some basics. Don't change text link, content and menu bar navigation links while creating new website, change website layout only and images (set new image as per old image name name and link, don't change it). Many time user change navigation bar links which caused broken link issue in search engines.

You should upgrade website on timely manner, There will no problem after redesigning. Yes, it may affect on ranking but after redesigning you can do SEO process again to get your website ranking back.
