If the products are GPL-licensed then there shouldn't be a problem since the code is open sourced and available to anyone to use...

The GNU General Public License (GNU GPL or GPL) is a widely used free software license, which guarantees end users the freedom to run, study, share and modify the software.

      That's what they are claiming:

GPLDL can offer so many WordPress Items for free because all WordPress Items are licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL).

Since the GPL gives all users the four freedoms to use, share, modify and redistribute software as they please as long as they inherit the GPL to their derivates, GPLDL makes use of the redistribution right. This enables us to bundle themes and plugins we purchased from 3rd party developers and offer them for download at GPLDL.

GPL licensed plugins and themes are available without cost from WordPress and from many other sites. I would certainly prefer to download from WordPress and not one of the other sites. Support and a guarantee from included Trojans and viruses is a good incentive.

You will often find that the free version is very basic and the publisher will try to upsell to a fully-featured version.

    From a plugin developer:

"Developers still have enforceable rights even if their plugins are distributed under an open source license.
These Plugin Trolls may still be liable for trademark infringement and/or copyright infringement."

Yeah, I always prefer to download plugins from WordPress after reading through the comments etc. 1 bad plugin could mess up your whole Wordpress site.
