Domain Registration Issues...

I'm hoping this is the right area to post this. I'm having some issues with an "offline" clients domain.

They do not have their hosting info, control panel log-in or password. They had someone managing this for them...to the point where the "manager" even registered their domain name & opened the hosting account....in his name naturally.

Now.....This "manager" supposedly passed away recently. No one else had the info but him....My client tried contacting the hosting company (liquidweb)...and was told they could not request the control panl info...since they were not the "registrant" of the hosting account..or the domain name...

How does one deal with a situation such as this where the only one with the info & registration has passed away.....How does my client prove their case to the hosting company? How can my client gain access to their account?
As of now...the hosting company is of no help....will not listen to reason.

I'm hoping maybe someone can shed some light on a solution....I'm sure this has happened in the past...

Thanks,
Ken

What a sorry state of affairs.

The so called "manager" must have a list of sites he "managed'. Is there someone who can access his computer where he probably maintained a list site he looked after. He might just have 1 account with the host company for all his sites.

    Good luck.

best case scenario is as gottahave has mentioned.

worst case scenario is to see if your client has any records of the hosting payments/domain registration, ect ... to the "manager" and also hope that there is some documentation somewhere by the "Manager" of said info.

    maybe a printed copy somewhere?

Make sure you grab copies of all the site files, just in case the account goes away suddenly.

Definitely I would work with the survivors to try to get the info from that side. Start with family. If you can't find any, try looking for court documents that poont to an executor.

If you get any pushback at all from the family, get a lawyer to write them a letter, emphasizing the loss incurred by your client not having control of their account.

This is the approach I would take.

From a common sense perspective (having worked in a property related area), usually when a person dies, someone handles his/her estate. This could be a lawyer or simply a next-of-kin.

I believe what the hosting company needs is proof that the "owner of the account" has passed on... a death certificate from a state agency perhaps. And after that, a power of attorney document stating the name of the person who is managing the diseased's estate.

Once that's done, it'll be a matter of convincing this person who's running the estate to transfer ownership of the account to your clients.

Hope that helps, and best of luck!
