I recommend PHPbb.org; you just download the software, tweak it the way you want it, and you have a forum.

My Website: Squidoogeek
My Zazzle Store: The Veroshi Store
My Squidoo Lenses: Kitty222

Been using phpBB2 and 3 for many years now without issues.

Some tech dudes once warned me that it's not as secure as some others, but I'm yet to encounter a security problem.

Also, check out BBpress - it's free forum software from makers of Wordpress.

Check your Cpanel of your web site. Fantastico De Luxe usually has phpBB included ready to install.

I use phpBB as well.. But some people swear by SMF Forum. It's also free, check out its features here:

I have used both phpBB and Simple Machines. I fond them both robust and user friendly. I do not remember the exact differences in features between then two, but there are differences.

If you are running a basic forum setup and do not want to do anything to technical, I would recommend staying with phpBB only because the amount of information in the web. It seems phpBB is more widely used, therefore there is more help information available for it.

Good Luck

I've seen many people using "hostgator" for their website, inside there's an option to create a forum... I believe.

Some hosting programs offer that on their cpanels so maybe you could a search on that since your looking for a good hosting company I presume... check it out.

Kevin is correct. If you host with HostGator, you can use Fantastico to install both phpBB and Simple Machines (SMF). It is incredibly easy and only takes a minute or two.

We installed a forum for our main site (yes, through a hostgator account) but eventaully deleted it due to the volume of spurious users posting spam related entries, adult items etc. The time spent on monitoring the forum was not worth it.

Be sure to set it up with all the security measures in place and possibly the option that you have to approve postings.

Best option is PHPBB3 New version of forum software. Very easy to install and using. So don't try other software. this is really good.

Have to agree Vbulletin is good as I'm using it myself, but the topic author is looking for free options.

Which I still think phpbb is the one if I'm to choose.

Cheers!

don't go for Simplemachines (i.e. SMF) as it is NOT open source, and the history of past versions of this software do not inspire much confidence in its longtevity...
