Website Under Construction? Make Sure You PROTECT Yourself !

Hello everyone,

Just thought I would bring something to your attention...

There is always a period of time when a website is currently under construction and you're not ready for the world to see it yet.

Assuming that you have registered a new domain and that you have it all set up at your hosting company, when you type in your domain name what appears is basically just a blank page which says index of/. Underneath it will say .cgi-bin/.

You may have uploaded your product(s) into a folder inside your public_html file. If so, you will also see some folders under the .cgi-bin/ directory. If they are clicked on your products(s) will be visible and could even be downloaded. Obviously, the last thing you want is for someone to accidently get to your website as they will have access to everything you have to offer. So, you need to do something to protect yourself...

You need to create an "Under Construction" Web Page!

This is basically just a Web Page which you create in an html editor like Kompozer and save as the index.html file. It doesn't need to be very fancy - just a little text saying something like "This website is under construction" and maybe an image - would do the job nicely. And best of all, no-body will have access to your products until you want them to!

Hope this helps someone...

If you want to keep people from browsing the contents of your product directories a common trick is to place an "empty" index.html or index.php file inside each directory.

Of course the best way to keep people from snooping on your site while it's under construction is to build it offline first on a local LINUX server (or using WAMP under Windows). You can then "fine tune" it's appearance and get all the bugs out before you upload it to your real host.

I have always created my sites off line. Even if I want to see what it looks like on the web, I have never used index. to display. I usually have something like the site URL/product.html or similar until I am ready to open the site and to be honest... that is when I have released the site url to the general public.
