Questions about setting up websites

by chuckievee 8 replies
Hello fellow warriors,

I need some opinions on the following,

I am starting from scratch setting up some websites and have been doing some research into choosing an email service provider like aweber along with a landing page builder like lead pages.

I am using wordpress for my sites so I am also considering using plugins like sumo to get things done. I have given some thought about using an all in one like kajibi but one that is less expensive.

Any thoughts on using separate pieces of the puzzle vs an all in one other than having all your eggs in one basket which scares me a little or are word press plugins workable?

I have done research on so many providers it has given me headaches. lol

I compared aweber to get response to constant contact to mail chimp. Each has pros and cons.
Then I looked at landing page builders and again trying to compare features and cost between them and more head headaches.

So I decided to seek opinions from folks who have walked this same path I am on. Any and all input will be appreciated. Thanks

Chuck

    One word WPO

WP is notorious for killing shared servers

You should have your own and learn to admin it

If you landing pages take more than 1 second to open, you lose 2.5% of users for each 1/10th of a second above 1 second

I should clarify a few things. I am using a host gator account to host my wordpress sites. I am looking to publish a newsletter and need to setup the email capture as well as a landing page, etc.

Just looking for some suggestions who is using what that is doing the same. thanks

What kind of websites exactly? Ecommerce, blog, membership, etc?

Not easy to answer. And when asking 10 people you will get about 25 different answers! If you use separated pieces it can get difficult to put them together for sure. Putting all eggs in one basket is also not good but if you think about it there is no difference if only one piece is not working or you lose the basket. Not working means not working at the end. And if you use separated pieces and you need support it may can happen that the support guys pass the ball to the support guys of the other parts of the chain.

Here is part of what I use: Wordpress with a premium theme plus a membership plugin plus autoresponder. I try to keep my stuff as basic as possible because it means less time to maintain. From the Autoresponders you mentioned I think Aweber is easy to use. You can always switch later and if you need less time to start you will get the ball rolling quicker.

That being said I will as soon as I can look into clickfunnels. Not cheap but time is money…

Oh, and landing page builders... there are so many… some are instabuilder, optimizepress 2, leadpages or profitbuilder.

Wordpress plugins can and will fail on you without warning. Wordpress has its flaws. the code of all the plugins, if they are built by different developers, will not be uniform, and will make updating the code for future browser, system, device updates a nightmare. make sure you do not guess and select the first plugin you can find. Try to use a system and select plugins that you know. If it's your first time, with wordpress, it's hard to know which ones you are going to be successful with. Take a look at Dudamobile.com as an alternative. My web design company builds our client websites on Duda and results have been fantastic.

    Here's a guru tool

    https://tools.pingdom.com/

Most shared hosts like gater with 2mb of content choke on it, with 6 second or worse speeds

as to the grades, your average site is 60's and 70's range, tons of tech errors

WP is a great cms, its a huge community

as to plugins, you got to know what are the top ones from companies that have a huge user base

themes, you are better off sticking to what wp issues in core package

we maintain over 300 business and search portals all on wp and all using the same theme and plugins we fully support

I have speed tests at that link in the 200s ms range for a full wp core install

    I get 98 or 99 tech scores

I wouldn't be using wp if it as junk

there's a ton of badly written plugins, the good ones are few and far between

we have some sites with 300K posts and thousands of members and no issues in wp

It's not a big issue to be tensed. Just pick any one of mailchimp or Aweber. Both are good and less expensive. I am currently using mailchimp and It's performing great.
