Default amember folder protection problem

I'm trying to protect my WP-content folder with amember, and I'm getting the following error:

Folder /home/content/ is not a writable for the PHP script. Please <br /> chmod this folder using webhosting control panel file manager or using your<br /> favorite FTP client to 777 (write, read and execute for all)<br /> After protection, please don't forget to chmod it back to 755

I went to my webhost control panel and enabled write on the folder, but same error.

I checked the amember forum, kb and docs, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong (which leads me to believe it's something really simple).

If you have any idea, help is appreciated.
