I will try and help until someone else with more knowledge of forums comes along.

1) There will be a setting somewhere in the admin control panel, perhaps in "registration" or possibly "users" that you need to enable or disable as it sounds like you have done most of the setting up but still have a setting somewhere which says that user registration can only be activated by admin, you need to set it so that users can finialise registration by confirmation link in an email.

2) This will be in the forum settings part of the Admin Control Panel and normally you get choices of whether last post is at the top or bottom and so on, if you can find that, set it the way you want it, it is not ALWAYS a default that last post appears at the top on all forum types.

3) Presume here you mean that when you subscribe to a thread, it is not sending you an email when someone adds to the thread? If so, that setting is probably in the user control panel or again in the admin control panel, a setting you need to enable for those to be sent as email.

Sorry if that is not helpful but without seeing the admin control panel I can't say much more than that, I hope someone else with recent smf forum experience will be along to help some more.
