Wordpress.com or wordpress.org? Whats best for building my site for my new business?

So I am starting a new business and I am quite confused with which option is better in terms of building a site.

I already committed to a premium plan with wordpress.com but now I realize that I need the business plan if I even want to have google analytics or plugins. The business plan is double the price, and although not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, im wondering if it might be better to just switch over to wordpress.org where it appears I just need to host the site, but ill have access to all customization, plugins, etc.

Hoping someone can help me out with some advice here.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Wordpress.com is their remotely hosted platform while Wordpress.org is their open source version of the software.

If you're wanting to build a website for your new business I would recommend going with self-hosted so you control every aspect of your website. It also looks much more professional.

Self hosted means you'll actually register a domain for your business and then purchase web hosting and install Wordpress. Most hosting providers will install / help configure WordPress for you if you just ask .

Once you do that, you just need to start building out your site! Let me know if I need to go into detail for you!

    Thanks for your response.

I think I am going to switch over to wordpress.org then.

To bad I already paid for premium wordpress.com for one year.

I suppose there is no way to recoup that or transfer it over to .org?

They offer refunds, but it depends on how long ago you ordered:

    Refunds
Purchases made on WordPress.com can be canceled and refunded during the refund period.

For new domain registrations, you must cancel within 48 hours of purchase to receive a refund. There are no refunds, pro-rated or otherwise, after 48 hours.

For plans and all other purchases, you must cancel within 30 days of purchase to receive a refund. If you used the domain credit to register a new domain, the normal cost of registration will be deducted from your refund. If you mapped an existing domain, or never used a domain, you will receive a full refund. There are no refunds, pro-rated or otherwise, after 30 days.

Wait a moment. I have used both. When you take your own hosting and domain, you are responsible for the security, backup and all that. When you go with the premium plan, WordPress.com takes care of all that. I'd say the latter is good for mid-level bloggers who only need to concentrate on the writing and on-page SEO.

The issue with using a Wordpress which is basically a web 2.0 platform is that you are limited to the extent of what you can do.

    Hi Scott,

As soon as you said business, your choice is .org.

    Endless reasons.

    Mainly though:

    - own your online real estate
    - branding potential
    - monetizing potential
    - best support system for a blogging platform
