Is 1280px wide by 350px high too big for a header image?

I know it's massive but the design calls for the content page to overlap most of the header with a negative top margin. So the header image frames the page.

The main header content is only 800px wide so it will display on almost all monitors assuming I align it in the center.

Are there any technical or practical problems to look out for using an image this big?

Thanks for any tips!

    Hi David

Doesn't a 1280px width cause the dreaded vertical scrollbar to appear? If the content is 800px wide why does the header have to be so big?

Otherwise it shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks. You're right about the scrollbar. I didn't see it because I have a wide screen. I need to rethink this.

The challenge is a very unusual header image that's only effective at a large size. Very difficult to make it blend with a background image on a wide screen at smaller sizes.

I should upload a draft and see if anyone can suggest a workaround.

  • I always advise 960px as a good header / page width when designing websites and graphics

According to stats published by W3 Schools, larger monitor sizes are becoming more popular: Browser Display Statistics

I still prefer to design for screens less than 1000px to be more accessible. Also consider your audience. Does your client want to appeal to netbook,, pda, and smartphone users?

Would love to see your header-

      60% still use 1280x768 px.....

And I suggest to reduce the header if you are using 800px of content size.
