I have a website I put together using wordpress. However, I find it takes a long time to load, How can I speed up the load time? Is there a plugin or tool that does this? I am concerned because of all the talk of the new Google. Also, it is annoying when I visit a sight and it loads slowly.

Oh...the site is bookwebcasts dot com
If you want to see how slow it is (Is this the case with wordpress?

    Hi Bernie

I looked at your site, it does take a long time to do the initial load. However I'm not sure WordPress is to blame - it may be your theme, or one of your plugins.

As an "experiment" try changing WP to it's default theme temporarily and see if that helps. If it doesn't then continue the experiment and try disabling your plugins. You may find teh culprit this way.

WordPress sites generally load pretty quickly. Of course like any site they are affected by the speed of the host, WP is also dependent upon a MySQL database so its speed is a factor as well.

    Let us know the results!

    Bernie, hi,

Yes - I absolutely agree with Bill.

Plugins can definitely slow down load times - especially if they need to access other sites for information to do their job, like Share This or Related Sites type plugins.

Poorly coded themes will also have the same effect.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

I think you can try to use WP-cache plugin.

Try a cache plugin and the use google libraries plugin. You may just want to get the firefox plugin: firebug and give it a run to see what EXACTLY is slowing your site down; and work from there.

Plugins, themes, heavy images and scripts in your wordpress blog design can all influence the speed of loading of the blog. Having more plugins makes the blog and server load heavier and slows down the loading speed.

Similarly, theme design and images increase the load time. Use WP Super Cache plugin, and also clean the temporary log files and unused table files regularly. One of the plugins that has been the best for this job is Wp-optimize which clears all the unwanted files and reduces load on the server, thus increasing the load speed.

If it's possible not to use plugins, then don't. Certain modifications performed by a plugin can actually be done by modifying the theme. It's much elegent and less clutter.

The problem may be with your web hosting providers. Sometimes it may happen that site is hosted on busy or slow (cheap) servers.

Not a big fan of any cache plugins, a properly setup and maintained WP blog on a decent host shouldn't need one.

Nonsense. For most users, enabling WP Super Cache is simple and straightforward and will offer orders of magnitude better performance. Most web servers can spit out hundreds of static html files in the time it takes to serve one WP site. Given that WP Super Cache creates such static HTML files, why wouldn't you use one?
