Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my website - It's fine in Firefox...

But in IE it is awful. I think it is due to it being XHTML right?

So I try to make it a HTML file, but it just changes itself right back to XHTML.

HTML would also make it easier for the Javascript.

I think the problem stems from the graphics package. When I just start with that blank template, it seems to be in HTML but then when I modify it (Put in the content) It changes to XHTML.

I have been using DreamWeaver to edit the page.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks for the reply - although that doesn't help me all that much. I don't know HTML code very well.

I don't mind starting again - but I just want it to be in HTML format

Hmm ok - I will do that now.

That, however still won't solve my problem with XHTML being compatible with IE

Your site isn't even opening for me in IE (any version). It wants to download the page.
I don't have any idea why though. If I save the page and then load it. Everything looks fine though.

I think you're on the wrong track with the "HTML vs XHTML" issue - that has really got nothing to do with your sites issues with Internet Explorer.

The answer to your problem is pretty easy - just validate the site and see what errors show up!

Go to The W3C Markup Validation Service and type your sites name into it. You'll see that you have at least 32 coding errors, all pointed out with detailed descriptions.

And when your done make sure to test it on all 5 major browsers (IE, Firefox, Safari, Opera & Chrome), as well as on IE6, IE7 and IE8. You might also run it through Browser Shots to see how it looks on platforms you don't have.

I will fix up those problems - hopefully one of them fixes the opening problem I am having with IE.

I was mis-lead a little because it opened perfect in FF...

I am having some problems with implementing JS now with XHTML - but I will get onto those other problems first

Am I just meant to remove the highlighted bit of code (in red) or fix the line up?

The problem is - when I do remove that junk, it gets put back automatically by the editor...

In most cases you need to fix the line. Unfortunately your editor is probably doing more harm than good in this case.

I'd suggest using a proper text editor instead, one that I like is PS Pad

Download PSPad - free unicode developer editor, handles near any syntax like HTML, PHP, XHTML, JavaScript, ASP, Perl, C and many other languages with HEX editor, multilanguage interface

Another popular one is Notepad ++

Both editors use colors to highlight the HTML syntax within the document.

Of course they both also require you to have some knowlege about XHTML and HTML in the first place, if you have any questions about that you can go to the best resource on the web for help:

W3Schools Online Web Tutorials

Look at it as a learning experience - it may take you some time to iron out the errors but you'll be rewarded with both a site that renders on everyones browser and the knowledge to fix errors like this in the future. Time well spent.

Wouldn't just putting it in plain HTML just be easier?

Or is that not an option with the Mini Site Graphics?

Don't waste time on it. Write up the task and post in on WF as a job or on RAC (rentacoder) as a job. It'll cost you less than $50 (more like $20 depending on if people are bored and you are clear in your instructions).

Learning what you are good at, and hiring out the rest, is the fastest path to success.

Fixed all the incorrect - syntax.

Didn't fix anything I still have the same basic problems

But I learnt a whole lot - so all good.

It works in HTML form - but not in XHTML form. But it needs to be XHTML because of the minisite graphics. Does anyone know if I there is a way to get around this? All my other graphics packages have been sent to me in HTML format and worked fine - These XHTML ones are killing me

Edit: I had been using Netbeans which was highly recommended by someone at WHT. It was really good but the problem it had was that it can't do word wrap, which meant horizontal scrolling for me. At least PS Pad can do that. There are a couple of things so far that I like better in Notepad++ but overall pretty good so far.
