WordPress themes: Do you prefer one with menu options, or do you prefer to edit the code by hand?

When using a WordPress template theme do you like to use a theme with lots of menu options or do you like to edit the php, html, and css files and code by hand (manually).

I am not a designer but know the basics of HTML and CSS and I am finding it much easier and more efficient if I edit the code by hand rather than using a WordPress template theme with lots of options.

I was using the free theme template atatualpha, which is a good theme and it has a lot of option menus which you can use to edit the theme. But I found that, in part because of all the menu options, the code looked more bloated and confusing. I ended up using a wordpress theme with no menu options and it was much, less confusing and more and simpler to edit manually.

As experienced designers, much more skilled than I, what are your thoughts on this?

Personally i prefer to add them by hand seeing as wordpress provides you with all the functions you need to do it. In general most themes dont have the options to control from the admin screen, so its a great thing to know how to do as it broadens the range of themes you can use by a consierable amount.

Thanks for your replies guys. Yes Rob, I've noticed that not many free themes give you admin screen options, atatualpha is one of the few, which is why I think it is so popular. Paid themes like thesis do have menu options, but come at a price. Also if you want to sell/flip a site it is much easier to transfer a site to a new server with the code already edited directly.

I agree by directly editing the code gives you wider range of themes to choose from, which is big advantage. I have only just started doing it this way, I built my first site using an admin screen.
