Thinking of changing my website - need some advice

I'm thinking of changing my website that was built for me in Dreamweaver to some form of CMS - maybe Worpress as I use that for my blog and have finally got to grips with it.

The site isn't anything flashy and at the moment has a smallish amount of content but am expanding it as I understand SEO.

So I need a platform that can offer good SEO and will be easy to migrate my current site to. I also need to make sure that any backlinks are carried forward so it would need the same structure or a front end to manage 301 redirects - I think WP has a good plugin for this.

Any advice first of all for platform and secondly for a good theme that is more website that blog style but also has good SEO?

I'll most probably outsource the initial build and migration but then take over adding new content and structure.

My current website is shaunedwards DOT com as that will help you see what I need to migrate.

Using a custom permalink structure you should be able to reproduce the page names using WP.

I always use the Atahualpa theme. It's completely customisable so you can make the site look as simple/fancy as you like. It is also a great theme to use if you don't want your site to scream "Wordpress blog" as you.

I can PM you some examples if you are interested.

if that is a database website, just install the wordpress and import the db file ... thats how i do most of my work.

I'd recommend Wordpress. Either source an existing theme (whether free or purchased), or have a web designer (or yourself, if you're feeling brave!) design a Wordpress theme. It's certainly possible to have it look more like a web site, and less like a blog - although you might want a news page, or something similar, which would be of a blog style, to keep visitors / customers updated etc.

There are also some great things you can do in terms of promoting the site; Wordpress uses a plugin structure to allow you to extend and improve the functionality of your web site as well.

I'm liking the wordpress approach more!! I've been using it on my blog for about a month now and am fairly upto speed on it. I like all of the plugins and support seems good.

Any more ideas on themes that are less blog looking?? Don't mind paying if that's required.
