There are a number of ways of doing this, a simple method is to use the 'Security" section of your CPanel. There is an application in there that allows you to password-protect directories, if you protect the root directory then the whole site will require a password. Of course you may want something fancier, such as allowing users to sign up for accounts and choosing (or assigning) passwords. The solutions for that range from simple PHP scripts, membership site software or plugins for WordPress or Joomla. One script I've found useful for doing this is Quadodo PHP Login Script by Quadodo :: Only the best free PHP Login Script available today!
