I will echo what many have already said throughout this forum. Go with Wordpress. It is super easy and you have lots of plugins and themes to choose from.

Personally, I just use Wordpress for all my IM. For my clients I sometimes code static sites but even then I try to steer them to Wordpress.

I think Wordpress is one of the best platforms made for people who don't know how to code.

If you want to learn, just go to your local bookstore and pick up a html/css book and read. I learned that way. I have been doing it now for 15 years.

If you want to learn with video, go to Lynda.com. They have great tutorials, though they are not free. There are other sites on the web that will teach you how to code html/css. Just Google html or css and go from there. You are bound to find a site you will like and can learn from.

If you want to do web design you also really need to know Photoshop.

So, to save time go with Wordpress.

I have a cool site where I spent a lot of time to visit it to learn anything about website and internet. It's softarchive(dot)net. This site is crazy-funtastic. You can even get some Lynda(dot)com copies for free over here. Go ahead, take a look on it. It's good for beginner to learn for free.

But when you go professional - just don't get your software from it. Get the real one from the real site.

    filiks,

If I were asked where a new designer should start learning website design I would answer that learning site usability standards should come first. If you start with that knowledge as your base you will have a leg up on many designers.

Unfortunately, most people start their quest by learning how to write code. And frequently learning usability standards fall to the wayside as they become overwhelmed by all the other stuff they must learn.

Designing a website is easy. Designing one that meets the functionality and usability needs of the users is a tad more difficult.

A good place to start is, surprisingly, the U.S. Government. They have a site for Government designers that is focused on the subject of usability. It is pretty comprehensive, and supplies a number of resources including open source templates. Who would a thunk it? Anyway the link to the site is below.

I have to completely disagree with the answer from koolphoto. Wordpress will teach you NOTHING about web design. In fact, you need to understand web design first in order to do anything more than create posts with Wordpress. Also, Photoshop is absolutely irrelevant to web design, unless you want to use it to visually lay out a page, and then have it cut the page up into a bunch of little images. Again, you will learn nothing about web design.

The usability suggestion is a very good one. A pretty site is nice, until the user can't find what he wants. Then they're gone. In a hurry. Forever.

You WILL need to know how to code HTML.
You WILL need to understand CSS.
You SHOULD learn PHP, and probably ASP, Javascript, etc.

Check out w3schools.com, echoecho.com, w3.org (they create the www standards). There are tons more places to get tutorials. Don't forget youtube.
