Hey Guys,

I've got a neat idea I want to explore and it would include building a large website. It would be a long the lines of something like the social network sites, facebook, twitter, etc...

My question is, what does it take to build one. Where do you look for companies who can do that?

Thanks for the help,
Jerry

    well you need money
    lots of it
you need a team, actually multiple teams of expert programmers
you need a team of lawyers
you need a datacenter, or maybe many servers with a large, very large bandwidth
then hmmm... you need people, so you'll probably have to advertise
so you also need a team of marketers, consultants, etc
because first of all you would need to do BRANDING, which would require a lot of money

I would say that you wouldn't have any money in the begining, so the profits will be on MINUS for a year until you can start offering advertising or something
so you need to hang in there until you get substantial traffic to compel advertisers to come buy adspace from you
all while you are using money from your own pocket

so maybe on a low budget you would need 1-2 mil $

    that's how I see it

This is a great post but I am surprised you did not get much response. I would advise you to draw up a business plan before you proceed with this project. The cost of this project may outperform your budget. One of the things you could do is simply start small, using a content management system and then gradually expand as you get more traffic and visitors. Qondio is a good example and I am sure this is something you want to achieve, have you tried contacting any of these companies to get some advice? Its probably a good way forward.

That's right. No use allocating resources to things that you do not yet need. Focus on the basics for now, the things that you absolutely must have to start implementing your plans. Then expand/upgrade as needed.
