I'm not a fan of Internet Explorer but nonetheless as a developer it's something that I need to use to verify design compatibility.

Currently I need to support IE6, 7 and 8 and am looking forward to dropping the IE 6 support soon.

But of course there soon will be IE 9 to consider, and Microsoft has now released a "Test Drive" edition of their new browser. You can get it here:

Internet Explorer 9: Platform Demos

This is not a full-fledged browser, it's missing a lot of features. Interestingly you can install it without overwriting your previous version of IE (I installed it on one of my Windows 7 machines that also has IE 8).

Probably a good idea to test it out with your latest designs, to see if you'll have any issues when this is released later this year - that's the reason I downloaded it.

new browsers, while important to support, take YEARS to become the majority of what is used. I can't wait for IE6 to drop off the radar either.

  • Thanks for info on IE9.

Unfortunately, the reality is, even though support for IE6 will be "dropped" by the Microsoft empire, it will take years for the 20% of www people who still it to stop using it. Some of these people don't like change and others live in countries where the web is very slow and don't have access to upgrades.

I can't wait for the death of IE6 but I don't think it will be coming anytime soon

Thanks for the update. Since IE7-8 work pretty well I'd assume IE9 wouldn't be much worry. I wonder if it'll finally support border-radius?

Even though we're stuck with IE6 for quite a while longer, at least it finally trails IE8 and 7 (in that order) in terms of real-world usage.
