Hi all... if 'correct keyword targeting' is your thing (which of course it dam well should be!'...lol), then you might like to donate your two-cents worth to a challenge one of my clients is facing right now.

Rose (my client) is a "Healing Practitioner" (pseudo-glam title for "alternative therapist"). She lives in Auckland, New Zealand and has her own clinic.

Her specialties (healing-wise) are: Pranic Healing, Elohim Healing, Divine Healing and Zenna Healing. The generic term for all these types of healing modalities is: "Energy Healing".

Rose is about to have a website (with blog as a subdirectory) designed and built by an excellent web design firm in the US.

She has asked me (as her mentor in "all-things-Internet-Marketing-related") for advice on "which angle to take with the content of her website and blog -- and for the reasons I am going to list below, it actually has me "stumped" for the first time, ever!

The primary purpose of her website is to generate leads and enquiries (via email and telephone) from local Auckland folk who are suffering from any one of a range of conditions (i.e. menopause; hormone imbalance; recurring chest infections; depression; stress-related disorders; certain types of cancer and a number of other ailments).

Originally my client had a 'rather amateurish' website built locally that simply did what most (often clueless) web designers do -- simply positioned her as a "Pranic Healer who also combined several other treatment / healing regimes i.e. Zenna Healing, Divine Healing and Elohim Healing in order to best deal with / treat / cure the patient's problem/s.

NB: She has had some VERY enlightening successes with animals i.e. cats and dogs as well! (I've seen the vetinary reports and they certainly have THIS sceptic wanting to re-evaluate his cynical attitues towards 'all things weird and not-backed-by-a-shred-of-scientific-evidence type stuff!!!)

The thing is this: Pranic Healing, Elohim Healing, Zenna Healing and Divine Healing ARE NOT highly searched terms by the "great unwashed" in search-land...as you can well imagine!

So, from an organic point of view, no matter how much I optimized her website for the above-mentioned terms and associated terms, to my way of thinking it could well turn out to be a giant mistake!

Typically, someone suffering from hormonal imbalance ISN'T going to instantly think..."Oh my gosh, time to book an appointment with my local Pranic Healer...I must Google and find out who / where he/she is!"

Instead, they're almost certainly going to type in HIGHLY SEARCHED and HIGHLY COMPETITIVE phrases that include "menopause", "hot flushes", hormone imbalnce" etc... in their quest for information on how best to resolve whatever is ailing them.

Sooooooooooooo...with that in mind, if YOU were about to design and build a website to promote your 'healing services' with a view to turning as many enquiries into actual appoinments, what content-angle would you take?

Would your website be full of articles on all sorts of medical conditions that 'you knew you could treat via one or more of your "alternative methods"...and then summarize each article with the suggestion that you COULD potentially help these folk if they booked an appointment with you?

Or would you take a different route?

I really want to steer this woman in the right direction but for once I am asking for help with the nature of the challenge she faces (and I face later on from an SEO perspective).

Sure, I will use PPC in the early stages at least to drive some instant traffic to her site. But ultimately she has the potential to corner the market in her field if she dominates Google for the right phrases.

If you know anything at all about Pranic Healing or Zenna Healing (or have the time to Google it and learn the basics), what would your recommendations be for the page content / site map structure?

If I need to clarify anything more for you, just ask

Thanking you heaps for even reading this far

    Hello Smeatz,

Several years ago I took a different approach altogether to problems like this and it has served me well.

Without going into a very long story I would focus on what she does and site conversions. In your mind, during the site development, forget organic search results are even there. Design the site as if all traffic would be coming from PPC.

THEN turn your attention to the organic search issue. Then you would consider phrases that are more popular yet still would work for your client. All of that work should live on another site and link to the main website. Even if that other site is a subdomain of the main website as in "ailments.website.com".

I would recommend that the main site talk only about the actual practices that she engages in, only mentioning something like "menopause" if it's relevant and NEVER to get search engine traffic.

The subdirectory containing the blog should also be "on topic" and discuss things that may not be highly searched.

It is the subdomain or the external site or blog where all manner of spider food should be dispensed. This also does not need a high quality design skin either as it's primary goal is to get spiders to visit and people to come but leave quickly to go to the main website.

In short, trying to build a site to serve two masters (people/search engines) is a mistake, you will end up being "half-assed" in both

Hi David... thank you ever so much for taking the time to really offer a "different angle" on how I could achieve the desired results for my client. Could you perhaps send me a brief message to: smeatz at ihug dot co dot nz...I'd love to give you a quick telephone call (if such a thing was ok with you) to really understand exactly the way in which you feel my client's site could be optimized?

I've enabled my own profile as much as possible for "contact purposes" but 5 mins on the phone would save hours / days of posting on a subject like this

      Cheers,

      Smeatz
