Mu is Multi user

Use standard wordpress for your sites unless you are setting up a multi blog environment

As Thompson said, the only difference between both is the functionality.
Wordpress=single Blog.
Wordpress MU= community Blogs.

As a matter of fact, Wordpress 3.0 (set to be launched this April) will mark the merge of both in only one application. Anyone will be able to activate the MU functionality by just adding a line of code in its functions.php

I'd recommend hanging out for WordPress v3.0 rather than going for Mu now

Mu though is pretty cool though (if you just cant wait and are itching to have a go

), and gives you the power to host multiple blogs under the same installation, and with the right plugins you can manage blogs that appear to be on completely seperate domains under the one wordpress installation. very cool.

Actually, come to think of it I wrote a post about this very subject...

Agree with what the guys have already said but correct me if I am wrong (might have dreamt it LOL) but isn't there also a plugin now so you can make a single WP installation have the functionality of WPMU? Sure I read that somewhere...

If I have time today I will go and check if I am going nuts or not and will report back

No question, Wordpress MU is basically a Blog Network controlled by a single administration panel.
Wordpress.com is actually a Wordpress MU installation, so are many large organization blogs like shopzilla, Cornell University, Live Earth and more. (Some of the the larger Wordpress MU Blog networks have up to 500,000 Blogs!!. That's serious blogging and great monetization opportunities)

You can actually use Wordpress MU to host a Social Network (with Buddypress) similar to Facebook and leverage the viral nature by attracting affinity groups with common interests. As Internet Marketers, this like having an optin list on steriods (opt-inlist 2.0 anyone

) . The money is in the list!! , as most of us know.

I could go on-and-on, but you get the picture. I'm actually in the process of setting up a pilot site to develop the Social Network qualities of Wordpress MU/Buddy Press. Feel free to PM me about my progress.

If you willing to have more websites with different CSS and completely independent layout you use WP MU if you want to have one webistes (blog) then you use WP.

@SusanneUK you can do it, but it is very complicated after you will do modifications. The problems is with WP Loop as WP MU is designed to generate completely different layouts why to invent the bicycle?

We recently launched a revenue sharing site with wordpressmu Revenue Sharing with Snurtl and are accepting authors currently. The things you can do with MU is only limited to your imagination really. If you want multiple sites with subdomains go with MU if you're wanting a single site stick with WP
