Hey there I have a question for ya guys being that im a total newb at this stuff. I am building an affiliate product review style site and I am going to use a wordpress template to build the site. Do I also need hosting? I have already paid for a hostgator account but wordpress charges 9.97 for "domain mapping". Is that saying they will host the domain? Please let me know what to do! Thanks!

I think you're talking about wordpress.com, are you?

To install wordpress you need to log into your control panel and click on fantastico. There you can install wordpress and then you just log into your wordpress admin panel by using:

    yourdomain.com/wp-admin

Thanks Mohammed. Well, wordpress quotes the following in regard to domain mapping.

      "
      Before Upgrading

The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes and plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and must still abide by our Terms of Service accordingly.

So it says with the upgrade to domain mapping (which I assume must be purchased) that wordpress still hosts the account. But if I do what you said with fantastico and do everything through my hostgator control panel then I am hosting it?

When you say "Wordpress", it can be a little confusing. Wordpress is a free program written in PHP. You can download the *program* along with widgets, plugins, etc. from Wordpress.ORG. You download the Wordpress program and host it on your hosting account (such as the one you opened with HostGator). Or, you can host a blog using Wordpress for free on Wordpress.COM using THEIR servers. Your web address would be something like yourname.wordpress.com. I don't suggest you go this route because it's on someone else's server and you won't be taken seriously as an affiliate review site. You're headed on the right track by getting your own hosting account and running Wordpress from there. Then there's wordpress.TV which is an instructional site on using Wordpress. Hope this helps. You're headed in the right direction. Good luck on the new site.

Also, since you're jumping in with both feet, you might consider buying a premium wordpress theme that's made just for affiliate reviews. There are plenty of free themes out there, but it's one less thing to worry about when you're trying to figure it out as you go.

Hey there! Thanks so much for the feedback. I actually installed wordpress on my hostgator acount using fantastico and have gotten a theme from the war room that should be fine. I ftpd the theme to my site /wordpress/wp-content/themes and will activate it that way. I think im set but ill post again if I hit a wall. Thanks again guys!
