Oracle is a database system. It is usually used for really large databases for big companies. It costs a LOT of money. And Oracle DBAs (database administrators) make a very nice salary.

That's the 100,000 foot level view.

For this you have to first know what is Database.A database is an organized collection of data. The data can be textual, like order or inventory data, or it can be pictures, programs or anything else that can be stored on a computer in binary form.
Oracle is made up of a set of processes running in your operating system. These processes manage how data is stored and how it is accessed. I will cover these processes in detail in the future; but for now we just need to understand that Oracle is a program that is running in the background, maintaining your data for you and figuring out where it should go on your hard drive.

In almost all relational databases, data is accessed through SQL, or Structured Query Language, and Oracle is no exception. SQL allows you to SELECT your data, INSERT new records, UPDATE existing records and DELETE records you want to get rid of. SQL can be embedded in other languages or you can run scripts of SQL directly against the database.

Oracle is simply a database but with very very advanced features for Backup and replication. And it has a much more powerful query system that can handle a lot more queries per second, and also make more queries with sort much quicker.

Although ,don't even think to replace MySQL with it - it's too costly
around 1 million $$ per machine to license!
and that's only the yearly fee I believe!

Application with oracle database are most expensive applications in the world and the ORACLE administrators are the highly salaried persons. Larry Ellison and his friends and former co-workers Bob Miner and Ed Oates started the consultancy Software Development Laboratories (SDL) in 1977. Oracle is for large scale enterprise databases. It has robust data-mining capabilities. For web development, the popular one is to use PHP as the programming language, and My-SQL as the database. This is because both PHP and MY-SQL are both free, and work very well for most web situations.

Another option is the microsoft .net environment running with SQL-server. That's a paid situation.

Oracle is probably not the droid you are looking for regarding doing some dynamic web page work for a basic website.
