hey, i posted this question in the programmers section..
figured i'll ask you guys this question too.

If i'm looking to create a website
what would the advantages of looking for a programmer over a web designer?
#designer #programmer #web
  • Hi Sean

A good web designer should also be a programmer. You should ideally look for one who has good visual design skills and good coding skills. It is hard to find both usually.

If you need more help please PM me.

Both are equally important..advantages varies depending on your requirement .. If you are looking for just static sites and HTML conversion a Good Designer can do this alone. If your requirement is dynamic sites with coding/customizations you need both designer and programmer. So in my opinion you need both.

They should both know a little abotuthe other's job. The designer is, of course, the guy who makes what you see and how you see it. But it's the programers job to make sure that it displays correctly. If the designer doesn't know any HTML, then he might make all sorts of designs that aren't possible.

If your goal is to create a website, then I would focus only on that goal if I were you.

Sure, you can find really talented web designers who knows everything about programming and vice versa, but does it really matter to you. You want a website, right?

There are designers who will design absolutely amazing websites, but they don't have the desire to learn all the quirks of HTML/CSS/browser compatibility and so on. And then there are programmers who can sit all day in front of the keyboard solving problem after problem but can't tell blue from yellow.

If I were you, I would divide the project in two parts (minimum). One is the user interface, one is the functionality. Then try to find the person/persons who can help you reach your goal, and don't care so much about what title they label themselves with. Who knows, you might even find a team of people who already work well together while focusing on their core skills and talents.

It depends on the type of a website you want to make! If your website is static then you should look for a web designer and it is obvious web designers knows about client side scripting and other technologies like Ajax.

And if you are concern about web application its more about functionality and less about web designing so hire a web application developer and it is obvious web developer knows about how to design a website .

    regards

I think there should be a more clear distinction. From my experience as a full-time employee for Web Agencies and as a Freelancer is that there is Web Designer, Front-End Developer and Programmer.

There is a thin line between Web Designer and Front-End Developer but they are different. And a programmer is more technical.

So based on what you want, you might need to work with 2 or 3 people. And one is not more important than the other. A good project needs good people to work on from all aspects to be successful.

Usually in Web Agencies, or at least the ones that I have worked with, they want you to focus on one thing.

And I agree that it all depends on what website do you want and who is your main audience.

A programmer may not be as creative(in designs) as a designer ,that is why there are two different positions have been created...so hire the person which best suits your job.

There are advatages and disadvatages a programmer can set up the site and do eveything needed and most likely can provide a basic design but a web designer will have much better designing.

really depends ... in large organisation ... basically programmers or developers deal with the back end stuff (middle-tier, database, etc) ... web designer focus on the presentation layer

An independant (successful) freelancer will generally know alot of both. However a big company with their own in-house IT team will have a specialist for each area. It really depends on who you find and how lucky you get if they are skilled in both.

Interesting topic! As being both I think I have what it takes. It kinda depends on the guy you'll be hiring, if you explain in details what you want you will get nice results from any good web developer but don't forget to check things like portfolios and previous projects.

I think a desinger has an edge in some areas and a progammer also has a wider range of services to offer if they are vell versed which most Programming gurus are.
