Converting from website to Wp ?

I've finally decided to do it....I'm converting my website into a Wordpress blog. But I am not clear on how to do this.

My hosting company told me that I should build the blog first and then ftp it to my web host account.

I am not sure how to do this. Does this mean I download the theme to my computer, edit it and then ftp it over? So then will the website I have on there now be replaced when I do that?

It would be great if someone had a tutorial on this that they could recommend.

I plan to use either a Thesis or StudioPress theme, if that makes a difference.

Thanks for your help!

Eunice

i think most web host now have cpanel with autoinstallers for known web platforms like WP. You can install it from there then just select the theme you want.

Sorry, I wasn't more clear on this. I have about 40 pages worth of content that I need to transfer over. I know how to install WP themes. I just need to know how to transfer over all that content from the website to the new theme.

    Thanks,

      Hi Eunice...

after you install WordPress just install this plugin so that you can import your 40 html pages:

I know a lot of people use Word Press but I just don't get it. I like the flexibility that comes with have an site that you completely control.

I completely control all of my WordPress sites as do all my clients - or are you talking about sites hosted by Wordpress as opposed to installing your own on your own domain?

      Care to clarify your remark?

If your current content is mostly html pages, then perhaps the best way forward would be to download your current content, install wordpress onto your host, then create new posts on your WP blog then copy your current pages into the posts.

You could also create a local instance of wordpress on your Pc to test this out before going live but it would involve installing XAMPP onto your machine, then installing WP if you know howto do that????

    Hi,

Read this book - How To Be A Rockstar Wordpress Designer.
It shows in details how to take a HTML design and create a Wordpress theme from it.

    Cheers

    Karen and da1fitz,

Many thanks for your good advice. I didn't want to attempt this without knowing the best way to do it. You've helped me tremendously.

    Thanks and thanks again!

Oh and the reason I'm moving to WP from a website is because it is WAY more flexible and easy to update.
