It's just about Blogs and Blogging these Days - Isn't it?

Hi Forum

I have actually asked this question some time back (in a number of different forums), but no one responded then. I'm assuming it's because no one reading it really knew the answer at that time, but as forum memberships grow over time, perhaps there is someone reading now that knows now?

It seems that the whole world is talking about blogs, and mainly WordPress at that. This 'blog rules' rhetoric seems to imply that any site that is not built on a blog platform will eventually get left behind as SE's prefer to index and crawl blogs than they do sites built up from a blank page.

Savvy internet marketers are always promoting products and courses around blogs that they boast the SE's can't get enough of!

There is also the thing about the speed and flexibility of using the Blog platform over a site built using SW such as Dreamweaver. So here's my question:

Is it possible to convert websites to blogs while maintaining their original look 'exactly; as it is? I know there are plenty of templates, and the option to buy other custom made templates. But what if the webmaster wants to keep his or her design and layout exactly as is, and the only difference being under the hood so to speak as opposed to a change in the visible site.

Like I said above, it's hard to find folks these days that are selling products or services outside of the blog platform, but to me it seems that there are some restrictions, but i could be wrong.

There's the added hassle of constantly updating the blog to the latest version, and I'm sure this must from time to time render various plugins useless, or at least temporarily incompatible until the developer has updated those plugins?

So as it's all about blogs and blogging these days, perhaps it's true that blog platforms are the way forward for site builders? Maybe static websites (unless created by the best of the best), are but a dying breed, and will eventually be laughed at when the 'blogging world' sees that there are still a handful of sites built and customised in the old fashion way.

Thanks in advance to anyone who may respond to the above.

    Hi,

Yes its simple to learn how to create blogs (specifically Wordpress themes) from your static sites. A good book on the subject is How To Be A Rockstar Wordpress Designer.

Its an excellent book. I totally recommend it.

    Cheers

From my experience when I use Wordpress the best word I use to refer to it is a CMS, or Content Management System, which can be use also to create static websites. I guess the use to do blogging is what made it famous and what most people use it for but it can be used for other things as well.

If you have already a working version of Wordpress, you don't need to updated it unless you want to take advantage of the new updates and new plugins that come out. But if you have is mostly static pages, if it ain't broken don't fix it.

The advantage to use a CMS is that even if you have static pages for the whole site, eventually you might want to change the look. If you use a CMS, like Wordpress, you only need to change the theme and doing that will require less time to update all your pages, instead of creating all the pages one by one for that changes you need to make to update the look of your site.

I like Wordpress because creating themes is fun and updating the content is easy.

      I hope this helps.

        Thanks Max, thanks Andrea

Actually i wasn't holding my breath for any kind of response as i've asked about this before but to no avail, so it was a nice surprise to see these replies

That book certainly looks interesting and i'll be downloading the first chapter to see if it's above my level or not  I generally use WYSIWYG and do very little raw HTML.

There seem to be a lot of myths on the internet too, and one is that Google and other major SE's like sites to be meet W3C standards as the code is easier to crawl and it also contributes to faster page loading which is another 'said' variable recently added to algorithms.

That said, i see plenty of sites built using Wordpress which enjoy good online credibility, Page Rank of PR5 and above, top SERP, and yet when running the URLs through the W3C validation tool, the come back riddled with errors, sometimes in the 100's per page...

I have over 28 active websites and have painstakingly been getting around to revamping them all, but it's been extremely time consuming. The idea of starting all over again converting them to Wordpress seems a little daunting, but the reason i'm considering it is like i said in the opening post, and that is everyone seems to be using the blog platform these days. Additionally, all the so called Gurus are saying that sites that do, fare better in the search results simply because the SE's love to crawl blogs as they are built with SEO in mind.

I may start with this site as it's non commercial 'Nanagine dot com', and if i do, and it comes out exactly as it looks now but on a WP platform, i shall report back with glee

Thanks once again for responding guys, it is appreciated.
