Hi Everyone,
I'm looking to change hosting companies soon. I was curious to see what hosting companies everyone likes.

Who is your favorite hosting company and why?

Thanks!

    site5.com

    stray from the crowd....

good pricing, servers aren't over crowded Great support... better than most IMO....the multi-admin feature to manage multiple website is awesome, Love the custom cpanel. you can request traditional cpanel access if you want.

    Have tried hostgator and siteground.

Don't like hostgator Loved siteground but much more expensive for higher quality, not good for many sites.

I find site5 to be one of the worst host there is. They would just disable to site for vague reasons. Maybe they want just want you to upgrade to a more expensive server.

I forgot to mention that I am hoping to leave go daddy. I have shared hosting and I have had my website hacked. I am fairly sure that it was because of the shared hosting and that my neighbor got hacked, and then so did i.

I have been told that my friends shared hosting account also have been hacked 3 weeks ago.

      My advice:
      • Signup with other webhosting that have strong security properties to prevent hacker.
      • Also, never shared your webhosting username and password with others including your family unless you believed on them.

        I've used a few:

Can't remember the name but my first host went bust...Arrggghhh!

Second one (Dataflame) was getting pretty expensive in comparison to others and didn't like the control panel (plesk)

Third one (HostPapa) was a nightmare for downtime and slow loading pages on my sites so I finally moved to Hostgator.

I know there's mixed feelings out there about hostgator but to be honest I have had no problems whatsoever! If things ever start to go down hill with them though (which I doubt) I'll probably give blue host a go.

        Hope this helps?

I use godaddy for domains and domains only! I'm currently using wiredkey.com for a project and playing around with a small slice from slicehost.com. I like the freedom I get from slicehost.com, but half the time I don't know what I'm doing

    Hi,

I use Netfirms to register all my domains.
I have also used and can recommend shared hosting accounts with -
Midphase ($2.95 a month - excellent customer service)
FatCow ($44 a year right now with $150 of free advertising vouchers - and right now you can win a smart car which is pretty cool)
Hostmonster ( I used them in the past but a little bit more expensive than the others)

    Cheers

I use reseller accounts on both HostNine and HostGator and like them both. I've had shared hosting and VPS on HostGator as well and had no problems.

I've used Rackspace Cloud and hated it.... limited controls, not a good admin area, security vulnerabilities - migrated away pretty quickly. I also used MediaTemple's GridServer way back when and it was incredibly slow with database driven websites.

It's quite impossible to recommend a host when:
    1. We have no idea of the type of site you're looking to host
    2. The typical traffic / visitor stats / bandwidth you use

For example, I host some sites with MediaTemple, and others with HostGator.

That's not to say the recommendations made are no good.

I've been having an intermittent problem with HostGator lately: the SFTP connection is sometimes successful, then sometimes not. I get CONNECTION REFUSED upon attempting to connect.

Today I have had four separate chat sessions with their technical support and have yet to receive any plausible explanation for the problem. The last guy I spoke to said their server detected "too many open ssh connections from your ip address," and therefore banned my IP address temporarily. Since I never had more than one simultaneous connection at any time, that sounds like baloney to me. I always close the connection when I am done with it, so what else can I do?

Has anybody else had this problem and found a solution?

That's why I'm searching here for hosting recommendations. I don't know where to turn yet.

          Hi

I cannot give you an direct answer to your problem at the moment, BUT I have one suggestion to make. When I called Site5.com, I found them very helpful.

They did claim to be strong on Tech support and advice in many other areas...

Although in the end I dont think that I will be able to find a solution to my own
Security problem with ANY of the Cheaper rate Multi Hosting Companys,
I did think that they did offer very good back up support for the price I would be paying.

I am having a 30 day trial with them at the moment..

My suggestion would be call them and tell them what your problem is.
See if they can offer a solution,

IF they can, you will be sorted... at least you will know the problem,

and you may or may not find a cheap alternative.

If you dont get much joy with who ever you speak to, PM me and I will give you the name
of the person whom I delt with, and I feel she would do as much as she could to advise you.

Just to confirm , that I replied,

I couldnt recall what time Zone they were on,

seems they only have phone support on eastern time,

you will have to wait until Tomorrow to call them.

but they do offer Live chat support 24/7, you may get some help if you try them 1st.

There is no SUCH THING AS UNLIMITED HOSTING SPACE that just a sales pitch, just think about what that mean (UNLIMITED HOSTING SPACE) lol to have unlimited hosting space ask yourself how large a sever would I need,if you have a 10 page website you will not need much space. And watch out for these so call free Domain names because if you decide to move you website to another hosting company you will have to pay for that DOMAIN NAME. I really like hostgator I have a reseller account with them and and I sell hosting space to small business never had a problem.

I currently have a VPS from softsyshosting.com and I have to say they are by far the best hosting for the money. Whenever I submitted a ticket for support, an answer is usually found within an hour. They are not a huge corporate conglomerate like Godaddy is, and which is why I like them.

I've tried the following in the past and was not generally pleased:
    - ThePlanet
    - Gate.com (terrible customer service, quirky control panels)
    - Godaddy (interface is too spammy, got on my nerves, great customer support though, definitely geared towards newbies)

..well i can't suggest the most suitable hosting for you BUT!!!! you can pick new hosting company by your own. getting suggestion and information to others is good resource in finding someone but it is most suitable is you search it by your own and try it for your self as personal experience. just read first the FAQ and the Terms of Service. this is the most important and effective way in order to find a good hosting one. well i hope it would help a lot for you. try also to check their forum and recent comments of their old client and partners. thanks.

      Hi,

One MAJOR concern that I have now is finding a hosting site that has better forms of security or shorter term back up facilities. I say this as I had my present Host account
destroyed by a Horrendous virus that wiped out or infected all my webpages which
      was well over 200..

To me Security is NOW A MAJOR issue... as more and more Host accounts get hacked or targeted...and I am told that hackers can send viruses through opt in forms, so they dont just have to hack your UN and password...

I was about to consider Justhost as from what I read they looked to have it all almost.

ie unlimited in the main things, ie space, transfer, domain, email accounts....at a low cost.

I called them after they emailed me back after I had emailed them to say that I wasnt able to get through to them... and they said that they have a service that offers daily backups or do backups free every 2 weeks which sounded GREAT ! ...As My present host site only backs ups only initially and will only hold backups that are about 3 days ago... so IF I had say done work 6 months ago and I got hacked and targeted with a virus, my work from 6 months ago would be lost and destroyed...

where as if Just host back up every 2 weeks.... The work I did 6 months ago will be saved as a backup... at least I dont have to keep my own back ups all the time even though that is always advisable...

I did find another Very good host company that offered Top security and that have antivirus detection in their servers/hosting, ... As far as I am aware very few present host sites offer this...BUT it is VERY expensive $300 a month.... My present company Lunarpages told me that for most Host companies that this is just not possible with all the many customers they have.

So I was going to join justhost... that was until I read this..

Just Host is a SCAM - Comments on Just Host Reviews

Most seem more negative, but admittedly there are also a few good reviews..

Another concern that I have is support and Communcation.... It says on this review that Just Host is very poor in this area...

I have tried calling them and of the 3 or 4 times I tried, I didnt get through even after 20 minutes.... Meanwhile I assume that I am be being charged a high phone rate while I am waiting to get put through to an adviser. They may be making money just on High phone charges while you are kept waiting to speak with someone..

I expect to be able to get through to someone at least in sales within 5 to 10 mins.
I know Technical help can take longer...

      Hi

Do they have FREE backup facility 2 weeks or less or daily if required.

Also do they have antivirus on their servers by any chance ?

I thought that they were similar to Lunarpages..ie a good cheap Hosting company...which overall I found they were ok, Its just that they have not moved with the times in terms of improvement upon their security.

For me, the hostgator team is easy to talk with, they have 24 /7 real person live support. I am always talk to them when i got confuse with something..instead of writing a ticket and waiting to be answered.

About the virus, few weeks ago one of my friend having trouble with his website that his visitor told him that there is a virus in there... He ask the hostgator then they help him to solve the problem

Hostgator is not so cheap because it charge more than $9 per month but i used it because of its offer ..UNLIMITED.

    Hi ,

I just contacted them... and they say they do back ups weekly...MUCH better than my present hosting Company ! or they do say if one knows what they are doing that they can set up things themselves through Cpanel to auto back up.but they may not offer all the tech support on certain things..

see my Chat below for more detail for those who are interested in security with hostgator.

overall it seems my best option so far !

    Many thanks to you all..

12:43:31 AM) Joshua Ma: Hello, welcome to HostGator Live Chat.
(12:43:31 AM) Joshua Ma: I will be glad to assist you.
(12:44:16 AM) Dowsp: ok... Can I ask about your hosting security
(12:44:38 AM) Joshua Ma: Sure, we have a security team on staff 24/7 monitoring servers.
(12:44:42 AM) Joshua Ma: Is there a particular concern?
(12:46:22 AM) Dowsp: yes.. very much so...with My last host company, I obtained a very nasty virus that infected all my files.. and the backup facilty only help files from 3 day prior..
(12:47:03 AM) Dowsp: What I want to ask is do you do back ups regular or even daily if required
(12:47:38 AM) Dowsp: or do your servers offer any form of antivirus protection
(12:47:40 AM) Joshua Ma: We do backups each Sunday. You can certainly backup more frequently if you prefer though to be safe.
(12:48:30 AM) Dowsp: to do daily back ups on say your baby plan what would be the costs
(12:49:03 AM) Joshua Ma: You can do it manually via cPanel. The other option would be to configure a cron job to run them, however that's not something we offer support for.
(12:49:29 AM) Dowsp: not even with business hosting
(12:50:18 AM) Joshua Ma: Unfortunately not automated. VPS/Dedicated solutions can run automated backups daily however if it's a big concern.
(12:51:27 AM) Dowsp: my concern would be if I dont know how to do any of these.. if you couldnt offer any tech support
(12:52:03 AM) Joshua Ma: We offer support for helping set up Backups. Just not to automate it with a cron job which would require a custom shell script essentially, that's all.
(12:53:14 AM) Dowsp: OK, IT may still be well worth considering even if you update just once a week. thats much better than my present host company..
(12:53:49 AM) Dowsp: is there any chance you may also offer antivirus protection in the future ?
(12:53:56 AM) Joshua Ma: You can always do that as well as take your own during the week through cPanel.
(12:54:13 AM) Joshua Ma: We do scan the servers for virii regularly through our security department.
(12:54:25 AM) Joshua Ma: Which isn't a guarantee, but typically virii aren't too big an issue.
(12:56:09 AM) Dowsp: OK, that seems very promising.... I will seriously consider your services....I may need to call someone 1st as generally I prefer to talk with a live person.. thanks for the feedback it has been very helpful. cheers.

Just had a quick look at their site,

I only know the very basics on some of the terms etc, so I am not sure about some of the description, such as their VPS page...

But I do get the impression that it could offer good security ... I will need to try and
take the time to familiar myself more with what its offering.

      thanks for the option.

          Good to see !..

As they are so cheap I dont surpose one has a lot to loose..

I just checked out about 5 or 6 recommendations. and still havent decided as yet.
Some Just dont meet my security concerns..

Hostgator seem ok, but they didnt seem as good as just host in security terms if Just host That is IF they are truthfull in what they claim

If they do what they say they do and offered reasonable support, then I would try them,

Its just that every time I call them , I am put on Hold and dont seem to get through on the phone lines... BUT I did get quick reply by email...

My concern is if I pay them I may not get any further things from them as what was said by some Folk on those comments I read on that ref site.

I also have Justhost, but their support is "mean"... like, they never feel freindly, ever, and they never answer your questions.
If you want to control the extra domains you bought from them (except that very first that you do get for free), you must first write them an email to ask them to give you the access.
They also don`t have collector mails feature, and in the TOU is stated that if you are caught ocuping more than 10% !!! of their server`s resources, you can be deleted. I asked and they said i will get a wwarning message first, but they didn`t want to say what is actually the limit (i would have liked to know how far exactly i could go, once i actually bought UNLIMITED SPACE & BANDWIDTH)
Yes, they are cheap... and there is a reason for that...

I also have Lunar Pages, and i like lunar pages... they are always fast & frindly to answer support. There are a few down issue here also: the CPanel is not the latest, and the file manager is kinda lame, no unziping & so.... Also, if you wish to add some SSL... you have to pay them to release some thng that usually gets released for free by others.... (I not very good with that stuff...). Other than that, i like it...

However, i`m also considering moving from both of thesevto a reseler or dedicated server, not sure where either..

            Hi Kitty

            Thanks for your detailed comments.

I just also seem to recall that if you have a high ammount of visitors to ones website
that you host with them , that this can be a problem...ie they may close you down..or something .. That is also not so good if you dont get support..

I dont think I will sign up with them..

If you are aware of how important security is... I wouldnt stay with Lunarpages.

I dont think anyone can envision just how bad this can be until its happened to them.

IF I Could SHOUT on here I would tell everyone IF possible ensure that security is a MAJOR concern when your looking for hosting...

Someone I know and trust recommended a dedicated server... BUT It is expensive at
$50 a month....but they say its very secure...

this is what he said to me a few days ago..Hope this helps.

            Here's who I use instead...

WiredTree - Managed Dedicated Servers | Managed VPS Hosting | Fully Managed Web Hosting

They specialise in fully managed Virtual Private Servers...

The package I use is the VPS512...
Managed VPS | VPS Hosting | VPS Server | VPS Web Hosting | WiredTree

It costs $49/month and you get all the benefits
            of a dedicated server.

Because you're not on a shared server as you
are with the budget hosting out there you're not
at the mercy of their other customers who share
the same server resources as you.

Because you're not sharing the server you
can also do more from a programming point
of view if ever you need to run or develop
            specialist online software.

Everything is managed for you and you get
            nightly backups.

As your online business grows you can easily
scale up to their other packages.

I've been using them for the past 3 months or so
            and their support is amazing.

      Hi Netman,

Appologies I may had overlooked your post.

Seeing that you have made over 900 posts, I would suspect that you have good experience.

I looked at the website, BUT some of the links dont work.. ( not a good start on their behalf when considering their business)..

Seems OK otherwise on the business plan at $12 a month...but its NOT unlimited Hard disc space. although I suspect 3000 would cover my needs !

I tried to contact their help desk to ask on security, but their link doesnt work.

Do you have any knowledge on how often they back up and do they do secuity checks or over Antivrus in their servers????

      Thank you

        Hi Dowsp

I'm sorry I think I'd missed your reply, nevertheless it looks to me that the helpdesk works correctly, and yes they do have daily bckups and antivirus. I use this for years, use to use hostgator and site5, and they're extremely reliable and features rich.
You may want to check directy with them though.

    Hi jrod11,

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. If you're going to change hosting companies and need a recommendation, then you should ask yourself why do you want to change in the first place.

I also notice that you mentioned you're happy with G Daddy, so you have already found what you're for. That's good because I would have recomended the same. I use GD mostley because of how the dashboards work, and the amount of easy control one has.

I like to use a lot of applications, blogs, estores, etc. And all the free open source stuff out there needs to be downloaded, and then configured and re-uploaded, then you have to set up a database to run the PHP apps.

What's dope about GD is in the hosting dashboard, you can have all kinds of open-sourced stuff installed for you by GD. No hassle.

If anyone has ever downloaded a blog like WP and had to configure it manually plus set up a database, knows it's a pain and takes a lot of time. GD will do it for you.

Just to be sure I'm not promoting GD, there are a lot of other companies that offer the same thing. If it sounds like something you would be interested in to make your life easier, call the company and find out if they have a hosting control center that can install apps for you like blogs, BBs, and ecommerce stores.

          Hi Kitty,

I just checked out site5.com that was mentioned by other members in this thread.

and at the moment it looks to meet ALL my reqirements.

Unlimited space/domains, Regular backups/Security checks inc AV, Good All round support including Phone support... Low Cost at $8.95 a month.

          Site5 Web Hosting - Starting At $4.95 A Month

I think that I will definately try them .... they offer a 45 day money back guarentee..

Heres My Live chat with them.............

Michael P. [1:41:43 PM]: Hello! Welcome to the Site5 Technical Support Live Chat! How may I help you?
Pete [1:41:43 PM]: Hi , Can I ask how often do you do back ups for the basic $5 plan and do you do any security checks such as Antivirus..Also How much space and how many domains can I have on this plan .........thk you
Michael P. [1:42:15 PM]: Hello Pete. My name is Michael.
Pete [1:42:45 PM]: Hi Michael how are you ?
Michael P. [1:43:29 PM]: I am doing great. And yourself?
Pete [1:43:50 PM]: ok thank you !
Michael P. [1:45:23 PM]: Fantastic. In regards to your questions, With the hostBasic plan, you are only allowed one domain. For multiple domains, you would need the HostPro package. Our servers are extensively monitored for any malicious activity, and dealt with swiftly. As far as backups go, we take nightly backups. We store 2 backups on the weekly level, and 2 backups on the daily level. The daily level backups are snapshots, allowing you to restore your whole site, or just a single file
Pete [1:47:16 PM]: Wow, That does sound very good.. Sorry whats the cost of Hostpro ?
Michael P. [1:48:41 PM]: HostPro is 8.95 per month
Pete [1:50:10 PM]: It does say that shared hosting is for unlimited websites at $4.95 a month....so wouldnt that also be more than one domain ?
Michael P. [1:51:47 PM]: The hostbasic is 4.95 a month when you purchase 2 years in advance.
[1:51:55 PM]: But you are only allowed one website
Pete [1:53:58 PM]: Ok... I can now see the comparision page.. 8.95 is still good if you offer most things including that level of security and backup..Does it also include cpanel and fantatico for wordpress blogs ?
Michael P. [1:54:53 PM]: Our shared hosting pakcages come with Fantastcio, but you get our own brand of control panel called SiteAdmin. It's almost the same, except we've developed it 100% in house
Pete [1:58:09 PM]: OK.... I have been looking for a host company that suits my needs for several days now but Ive been unable to cover all my requirements.. usually 1 main issue has been missing..BUT so far you seem that you may cover all my needs. which were Unlimited hosting / domains, HIGH security reular backups, and good support inc phone support.
Michael P. [1:58:34 PM]: We've got it all
[1:58:43 PM]: And an easy upgrade path if you need to expand
Pete [1:59:14 PM]: Thats sounds very good.. How quickly can one get set up ?
Michael P. [2:01:50 PM]: It really depends..
[2:01:57 PM]: Sorry, I had a connection lapse..
Pete [2:02:18 PM]: OK...It says be online in minutes if youorder online
Michael P. [2:02:39 PM]: Our system is set to approve and set up orders instantly.. However, if there is something on the order that raises suspicion, your acount is set to pending, and a sales manager has to phone verify you
Pete [2:03:44 PM]: Thats ok, Can I transfer all my domains from my other host site ok / for free ?
          Michael P. [2:04:19 PM]: Absolutely
[2:05:02 PM]: Our migration department can assist you with that when your new account is set up. Please note, however, that our migrations department is only open Mon-Fri 11am-8pm EST
Pete [2:06:04 PM]: OK... I will call tomorrow or later this week.....
Michael P. [2:06:28 PM]: Sounds good
[2:06:30 PM]: Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
Pete [2:06:44 PM]: Thank you for your help, Its great to think I may have found the perfect host !
[2:07:36 PM]: I will call one day next week.... Have a great day !
Michael P. [2:07:42 PM]: Well I'm glat to hear that.
[2:07:47 PM]: Very well, then. Let us know if there is anything else we can do for you in the future. Thank you for contacting Site5 and have a wonderful day.
Pete [2:08:11 PM]: will do ...cheers !

I've hosted a Magento store with site5.com for the past year. 5 days ago my server - zemnni - went down and stayed down for 5 days - after a backup restore that took 3 days my site was back up. No one at site5 was particularly concerned about my ecommerce store being down for almost a week.. I am moving out of there asap. Besides being down for 5 days, the customer service is weak and the site was slow....

Hi... Similar to what Lunarpages or Hostgator can offer as a Cheap Host plan that offers
unlimited options most good host companys offer these days... ie unlimited space, domains etc... with Good support... Ideally in the UK for me... and with regular backup service.. Minimum monthly... ideally weekly or even daily... and IF possible Antivirus or regular security checks...

I would feel much happier using a service who could offer these ...

I will accept an alternative to the UK if the support is ok and I can understand them.

      Best regards.

    Hi ,
I just found out the site5.com DO NOT offer longer term back up.

They only back up files from 48 hrs ago and update accordingly..

They wont hold files from say 3 months or more before if you ever need to
reset everything back as it was in the far past.

Its annoying as I did think even for the low cost that they had included it in theor service..

    Otherwise everything else seems OK...

I am back to square one.. May have to go with hostgator.

But my trouble with them is you cannot actually talk to them.

Theirs a big difference from what you find out when talking to just seeing a written comment as I had been well misled earlier when I initially had done live chat and they told me about their back up... They hadnt really fully made it clear to me.

BUT when I talked with someone they made it fully clear..

Also, Site5.com cannot Guarentee to detect if your site files are targeted with a virus.

They only scan their general servers, NOT within individual accounts.

This probably applies to Most similar Hosting companies..

I THINK that I did find one that will detect it in one individual account if my understanding was correct, BUT its $300 a month !

I also thought that Media temple looked promising with back ups and security,
But It seems that there Cheaper Plans which is more expensive than most cheap plans at $22 a month.... BUT its no different than all the Good cheaper host plans Ive looked at.

Heres their reply and my questions to them.

I have to question that Chances are Hostgator will be no different...

seems that I am inlikely to find what I want in terms of regular SAVED Backups unless I do them myself...Also I cannot see the Anti Virus on any of thoe plans I have looked at being effective within my own Host account.. Only their heneral server.

Seems so far my best option still looks like site5,com .

The person I spoke to today I found Very Helful, they also offer to help in many technical and Website advice areas that My Present Host site wont, as all they say is its not their area and to ask a webdesigner...which would be often be more costly.

thats my updated opinion so far...

    ---------------

The back is done on monthly basis and overwrites the old one, so if you got a virus and we took a back up the virus would still be there.

We do our back ups for everybody at the same time for internal purposes in case of a hardware failure.

Please note that we can not guarantee any back ups on the (gs) or guarantee virus free simply because we have a lot of clients with different websites attracting different types of traffic, we advise customers doing your own back ups on an external hard drive or a computer. At this time we do not offer any managed solutions.

    Hi Kirill

I have read the infomation that you sent me..BUT Can I ask two questions about your service that I want to try and be fully 100% clear that I understand.

    1) When you said that your Grid Dervice Hosting service does backups each month.

Does this mean they are Held for every month... or just updated.

My concern is , IF I set up a website in my 1st month and left it for say 3 months...
IF I got a virus on my site say in 45 to 60 days later and I wanted to reset my site as It was when I first set it up... BUT YOUR system backed up my files after 30 days...

Would the backup save the origional virus FREE File.... OR the Infected file.
OR would you save BOTH ?

    2) Does your antivirus only scan your overall servers ? and does this included indivual
clients accounts and the files that they host with you ?

I was just having a discussion with another host comany who initially I thought saved files
monthly ( not just updated them) BUT all they do in fact is update them. so any virus that one may obtain after 30 days.. will be in the saved backup.... and they wont carry a copy of the unifected file/s....

Also they only do a general antivirus on their general servers, and NOT in an individuals accounts files.. SO if someone obtains ay my password and targets files inside my account..The .Host sites antivirus wont detect any virus in my account.....

I just want to try and be clear on what I actually get and have it in writing so that I can refer back to it...and be more certain what I am paying for... sometimes I forget specific details.. if I am a bit uncertain on certain facts. as some of it can be a bit confusing as to what a service actually specifically does... and these are the two main concerns I have.

Ie SAVED BACKUPS....including held over longer term... So I always have a copy from say every 1 to 3 months..

and IF possible Antivirus check within my actual accounts files...

I have been told I can do all this myself and set things up to do this. Ie take backups monthly weekly etc... and FTP my files to be checked on my computers antivirus.

BUT I didnt really want to have to do this myself...

I also really want a copy held by the Host site as well..

    Thank you

    Peter

Have always disliked GoDaddy but recently changed my mind on the tools they offer. Their dashboard takes a bit getting used to but there is a lot of good stuff there.

Also you can easily restore your site to a previous backup by simply using their calender widget and clicking on the date you want restored. Saves a lot of time when security holes need to be plugged.

  • just about anywhere you ask this question, you will get more votes for hostgator than any other host. as for your problems with security...

It is up to you to make sure you get whatever backups you want.
from cpanel ( and probably other hosting control panels) you can setup automatic backups anyway you want.
there are also many different backup scripts that you can get for free and install to do backups however you wish.

yes, the hosting companies offer backup services but they can not possibly keep backup copies for ever for all their clients.

so, like the majority says, go for hostgator and take care of your own backups to be sure.

as for virus problems. the best thing is to make sure you always keep all of your php and other scripts up to date. that is how the hackers usually get in. they find a hole in something like a blog or bulletin board script that has not been updated.

    luck,
    robert

Site5 is my favorite hosting company. I've used many web hosts over the years and now I exclusively use Site5. Whether you need shared hosting, reseller hosting, redundant hosting, VPS or dedicated hosting, Site5's got everything. They're pretty reliable and, in my experience, very responsible. Support is pretty fast, too.

Awesome coupon and rebate offer here for new customers...

    Site5 Rebate | Save 25% PLUS $25 on Web Hosting from Site5

If you want your own unmanaged dedicated server with full root access, Site5 currently doesn't offer those (they will soon, though...) but here's a great option until then...

Site5 has pretty good, fair, clear policies concerning this... I've had web sites with them that got thousands of visitors daily and I've never had anything shut off.

They will, however, shut you off if you're doing something extravagant but that's normal for shared hosting. Site5 tends to be more fair than others, in my experience.

Its funny you mention it because I have been going back and forth in my head for a bit now on wether or not I should move everything to a dedicated server. I've been doing AM for years and never had a problem with my servers, never any downtime, nothing. I even run prosper off my shared hosting account and everything is fast as hell. Hosting matters though, is a pretty good company as far as shared hosting goes. I even use the same server for ppv. Maybe im crazy?

With GD, i've honestly never had a problem, and i've had sites hosted there since 2004.. mind you I have never used it for something like prosper or any real heavy traffic campaigns.

Who would you recommend for dedicated servers netman?

PS - is it still hot as hell over in MTL?

Hostgator - I have found their support to be very quick and efficient at resolving a wide range of issues.

If I have a problem or if there is something I cannot do - getting onto their chat support is so quick, and generally issues are resolved within 10-20 minutes of online chatting - they have been very helpful in this way.

According to me go for Xen based vps hosting. Make sure you get 512MB ram + 10GB disk space using RAID 10. Use lighttpd or nginx web server it will help. I don't recommend using your dsl connection, most isps don't like this kind of stuff and they may block you. A static ips is good for both webserver and mail server.

GoDaddy is horrible... they may be the most popular in regards to market share but that doesn't make their services of high quality... Check out NoDaddy and the NoDaddy Forums for plenty of stories regarding all that fun stuff.

I personally don't even really use shared hosting anymore. Its slower and less flexible. I just keep a couple shared accounts around for making tutorials/screencasts. VPS systems really aren't that hard (if ya use ubuntu).

my suggestion is dreamhost. I will only host my sites with them.

They are about 120$ a year for hosting. Normally you can find really good promos or sales where you can get a full year of hosting + domain for under 70 dollars for the year. I used the promo code "warrior10" it's 1 free domain, and i think it was $50 off 1 year of hosting.

"Unlimited" hosting space/bandwidth, and excellent customer service.

Omnis.com is great about answering newbie questions. I signed up with them last year and they are very helpful, they answer the phones quickly and they have 24/7/365 phone support. There interface is simple enough to use if you know anything at all about site design and ftp (loading your pages to your site) and if ftp is new for you, you can always call them and ask them your questions as you go along. If not you can use their free templates. They also have a plethora of third party one click installs available for just about anything you can imagine: realty, online school, shopping carts, etc. In my opinion they are aces!

Godaddy neither offers the best hosting services, nor is it insecure. With all due respect I have no idea how you come to these conclusions.

Shared hosting is not more risky than dedicated hosting. In fact, it is the opposite as if you manage your own server then you can fail to patch security holes and basically manage it properly. Shared hosting is monitored closely, regularly and by experts.

Godaddy is not great for hosting, I agree - I would use hostgator.

Recommendation: If you're doing anything other than a basic blog, do not even bother to get a regular shared hosting site. Go vPS, which is far more reliable. I've been using Neosurge for years and they have some rather awesome rates. You might even be able to find some coupons. Reliability and speed is rock solid and you won't have to worry about your IP being blacklisted due to someone else's garbage sharing the IP.

but in general their customer service is good, several times I have spoken with someone who repeats back to me almost everything I said. It's a bit strange, almost as if they were placing on record their interpretation of what I just said. But still wound up doing what they should do, and do it rather quickly.

I am a huge BlueHost fan. CPanel, Fantastico, Joomla, Drupal, lots and lots of other stuff.
I have a bunch of domains hosted there, but pay for one (the others are technically subdomains). I love BlueHost. GREAT, gentle, patient 24/7 tech support who never make me feel like the stupid, inexperienced user I am.

(Reminds me of an old joke about the tech support person at a computer company who advised his customer on the phone to package up her computer and take it back to the store and tell them she was too stupid to own a computer. LOL. Some days, that's me!)

Recently, I put a new domain on HostGator because someone persuaded me I ought not have all my eggs in the same basket... but I wasn't as impressed. Their CPanel seems to offer less, for one thing, and I wasn't quite as thrilled with the tech support, tho they did help me without even mentioning my stupidity.

(And I'm not at all stupid, I just feel that way sometimes. I am, on the other hand, an earnest student about these things and ever appreciative for every bit of help I get.)

GoDaddy -- I am so excited that I finally got ALL my domain registrations moved over to DynaDot. I will never use GoDaddy again. Awful, awful, awful. Don't use them for checking out domain availability, either. They'll snap up your good domain name ideas if you don't move on them right now. Here's a better place to check domain availability: InstantDomain

lolzzzzz, You'll find many reliable web host. Nowadays selecting web host is a bit like selecting a car. Ex. some people like to drive Porsche and other would like drive Ferrari. As we all know the both manufactures are reliable and popular. The same thing you'll find in web hosting world.

I mean ask yourself, would you like to drive a car, which is mostly popular and recommended by others or you like to drive car, which is able to complete your all exception and specification, which you are looking for. The choice is yours.

Want the best recommendation. Go look at the top blogs and where they are hosted. For myself it is MediaTemple. Smashing Magazine and AlistApart both host there. They even offer a CDN if you decide to market internationally.

MediaTemple client list: JQuery, Adobe, Starbucks, Sony... need I say more.

For $20 a month I host 15 sites, 20 limit on my account. for another $20 I could be on their CDN and have lighting load speeds in china or any country in the world.

I have conversations over twitter with them weekly about new technologies.

Not many retailers need cheap shared web hosting, but we recommend that if you do. All of these hosting companies charge around $ 10 dollars a month, and they have good technical support. The majority of Internet users to locate their research where possible through radio buttons on most regional websites Google and many other search engines. It is also illegal in the United Kingdom to apply the law of an offense under the law and returns to a crime like this like a ton of bricks.

This affirmation while not false, is not completely true

They're very good indeed, and just much known because they're there for a long time, though all that doesn't necessarily mean they're "the best". I can tell your there are tons of not as much know that are as good, if not better sometimes, but only less known as they're newer.

I recommend a small, unknown service:

Web Site Hosting, Shared and Dedicated Servers - WEBCS.com

Very few people in IM know this company but they host some of the major porn sites and that says a lot. Now, I'm not into that sort of thing (in fact, I think internet porn is a cesspit that's infecting and warping a whole generation).

At the same time, these are some of the most demanding sites of all that require a first rate host.

But the biggest reason I recommend this host is for customer service. They really bend over backwards (no pun intended) to get your account and keep it. I've been through a dozen different hosts and these people are by far the best. I've never seen a company so dedicated to customer service and this is the main thing you want from a host.

Webcs.com is not cheap, but they're not expensive either. In fact, I tried one of my sites on a very expensive "high performance" VPS network recently and I'm returning to webcs.com where I get more for less.

Another thing is... they don't offer silly packages like most hosts, i.e. Silver, Platinum & Gold. Every new customer gets a custom package providing exactly what they need. This means you can also negotiate price and terms. I was offered a dedicated server WITH free set up and maintenance. Try to find that anywhere else!

I'm sure you've got a lot of good suggestions but at least talk to webcs. Tell them I sent you.

Whatever you choose, pick a host with 24/7 LIVE support and a SERVICE LEVEL AGREEMENT. This is the most important and is worth a few extra bucks.

Whatever you do, don't go with some no-name reseller or something.. Trust ME!! I am a reseller myself and have had a HECK of a time with server being down, clients being pissed, me losing money, time wasted on my development projects since my server was down, my hosting company barely knew how to run the server, the list goes on and on. I think I am going to quite selling hosting all together LOL it's way too competitive market anyway sorry this is not about me but thought I would shed a little light.

LOL its funny how everyone is saying hostgator or godaddy

Dont get me wrong, I have used both those companies before and they are fine.

I just think its funny because most people suggesting those companies have not used any other company before... so their vote is pretty biased LOL

Those companies happen to be very good at marketing and they also have 100% custom control panels etc. which keeps their branding in tact throughout the hosting experience. This is why they happen to be most popular (and also very hard to compete with LOL_)

I think you have to specify the followings first:
    1. What kind of technology you are using for your web site.
    2. What database
    3. How sensitive your web site is for downtime?
    4. Estimated traffic expected
    5. What's budget?
    6. Do you have dedicated web master and other tech people?

Specify those questions in detail, you can find better answer.

If you're concerned about Security of your hosted website (i.e. protection against hacks), Hostgator looks pretty good to me - it's not the cheapest but it provides 24X7 monitoring of its servers for issues and has a good track record for up-time and speed, which are also important. The data centre it uses appears to be pretty top end (The Planet). However you're still responsible for ensuring your actual website doesn't let hackers in (or your web developers are!) in terms of protecting your application from things like SQL injection attacks, XSS, defacing.. obviously you need to keep your user/passwords safe, but there are things your developers can do to provide additional protection on public facing web forms, to check that what's being input on your form or URL won't damage your site.

I personally use a simple iphone app called iChanged to monitor my critical websites for unexpected changes, it alerts me if a change is made to my web page (and if it wasn't me that made the change, I go and check!). There's a free version that monitors up to 3 pages, and a paid version.

There are also some web and PC based products that do similar things, some free, some paid. You'll have to google for a review of these as I'm not allowed to put a link in this message.

I also ensure my critical sites are backed up frequently. For my Wordpress site, I use the backup plugin that emails me backups regularly.

    Kind Regards
    Helen

      Hi,

i am cautious about things like this.

I have 140 websites and 6 blogs and I am being shunted off Dollar2host.com because I over use my unlimited a/c.

      They are liars.

They suggest that I pay 24 times more for their services.
      I should coco!

Unlimited should mean that, but this is the third host that has done this to me in 7 years.

Like banks, they give you an umbrella when it's dry but want it back when it starts to rain.

      What are the guarantees?
