My favorite resource is W3Schools Online Web Tutorials. It's a great self-teaching tool, and you can practice what you've learned on each topic right there on the site and see your results instantly.

W3schools is a great reference resource but as a teaching aid you might be better off taking up some tutorial course where it takes you from using an editor to creating your very first website.

You learn alot more when your building a website from beginning to end, then you ever would trying to learn HTML in it's parts.

I actually learnt HTML from a book, not the internet, and it took me exactly through what i just mentioned. I learnt all i ever needed to learn in that one book. The result wasn't pretty that's for sure but by the end of it i knew HTML was nothing to be afraid of.

I should also mention i learnt HTML over a weekend but definitely mastered it after completing my 3rd site. I did not use any reference on my 3rd site so i knew i had it down pat at that point.

The book kinda lied though - i learnt it in a weekend but it said i would learn it in 24 hours.
