Hi All,

Quick question.

There is a nice display window toward the top of kiplinger.com, just below the main header and to the left, that cycles through 5 images with some captions below each image.

I'm wondering what this tool is called.

It's not quite a banner rotator.

And its more than just a slide show.

It's different from a lightbox.

So what the heck to you call it?

I would have posted a link to kiplinger.com and an image of the tool, but I'm still in my infancy here a the WF as far as number of postings.

Any suggestions on what this tool is called would be much appreciated.

it is a content slide show
its made of combinations of javascript, pho,html & css
here is an example of such a thing:

this was isnitially made for joomla, but then they extended it to work on various platforms. And it can work even on HTML & php sites, it just needs some variables or databases from where to pull out the content
every makes calls it in its own way: news rotator, front page display, article slide show, youcan`t really go googling as you do for "lightbox", everybody know that lightbox will take you straight to an image display kind of script. Well... is is a content display kind of script, but doesn`t yet have a standard name of itself

It's just a standard slideshow JK,
Easy to find within the content of the source,
Look for  in their source code!
Marry that to the css shown in the head code and viola

Google "jQuery slideshow" and you will find tutorials, examples, and code for a similar type of presentation. It is a combination of Javascript, HTML and CSS. I love it because it is clean and very SEO friendly.

Thanks for your input everyone.

So I suppose "Content Slideshow" sounds like what it should be called.

Also thanks for sharing on how it works.

Actually, to be honest with you. I know how it works because I created it.

I just wanted to know what it is called.

I worked for Kiplinger.com for about a year and a half as a web developer before they had to lay off a bunch of people at the beginning of the economic crunch that the US is still going through.

Right before I left Kiplinger, we were at the beginning of an entire upgrade of the Kiplinger.com website.

Now that the site change over is complete, I see that they removed allot of the functionality of the "Content Slideshow".

When I created it, it would fade in and out between each slide. And there were more control buttons.

I also created the calendar on their site. Notice how they just threw it in an iframe.

I guess they didn't feel like doing a total make over on it. Understandable since it's actually a pretty intense application. Complete with it's own cms. It even adds dates to your Google calendar if you have one.

I also made a few of the calculator tools you find in their tools section.

I apologize if I have offended anyone with me not mentioning the fact that I created the "Content Slideshow".

I was just always curious about the category it falls under.

Please don't be too mad at me.

Hi John,
I love design, but I'm focusing more time on IM these days. Time on the forum, especially the war room, has helped me a lot with that.
I see you've been very active since you reintroduced yourself to the forums, and you've been giving some great advice. Keep it up, things are going to happen real fast for you!

I certainly hope things will happen.

I have been doing nothing but working on my Turbo Flex Pro template generator for a long, long time.

I finally finished that, and now I'm working on a new project that I hope to release this week.

I'll being joining the War room this week and maybe do a WSO this week too.

Whoo Hoo!

After that, I think I want to start building a few more sites to get my AdSense revenue back up to par.
