is it possible to get on site SEO from the content on a pdf which is stored in a directory on your site? i have an ebook which has great keywords and content that would certainly help my sites on site SEO, but at the same time i don't want it accessible in the SERPS because i am selling the book. i have put it in a directory that is only visible once someone buys the book and goes to the "thank you" page to get the link

im by far an expert but i am not aware that the search engines read the contents of a pdf file. if you pasted the contents onto a html page it would. it will read the filename if there is a link to it on the site but doubt you will get enough seo value for that to matter.

i heard talk of google incorporating the function of translating images etc into text and then crawling it. if i find the article (possibly on mashable) i will post it here

It is possible to create site on PDF, but it will lack seo, you will get low amount of visitors, it's better if you make at least one webpage which links your ebook.
