Where Do Template Sites Get Their Templates?

I'm hesitant to buy a particular template because I've seen the same template on a ton of different template sites. I'm wondering if none of them really have the rights to the template and it can be downloaded for free elsewhere.

Does anyone know where they get them?

Thanks,
Brandon

Edit: Now that I think about it, I bet one company hires a freelancer to create a template, and then other companies purchase a license to sell the template on their site too. But I don't know.

very many sites use the afiliattion shop from "Template Monster" Web Templates, Flash Templates, Website Templates Design - Template Monster.
if you find that a template appears in way to many shops, that is usually the case. Template Moster has its own designers. Just to be sure you`re buying from the source, check fro the same "template number" on TM, you`ll usually find it.

but then again, all the TM afiliates shops look & kinda work the same. try a checkout and you`ll see what i mean.

if that is not the case, and you can`t find that template on TM, it is possible to be a shop that uses other afiliations, with more template supliers. In this case, the shop SHOULD state where the template comes from. That is the right way to go. If they don`t state from where the template comes, they probably claim is their own. If one such can be found on more places, then you should probably walk away from that one, cuz its licence is miscelaneous anyway...

anyway, you can post links here to the templates you`re interested about. Us designers are quite familiar with the market out there, we might have even worked with some of them. I`m sure somebody around here will recognise its origin and point you in the right direction

    good luck!

@farhanzl: once a template is out for sale, it is no longer unique...
if you desire uniqueness, you need to customise it yourself or hire somebody to do it for you

sites like templates.com either buy from freelance designers or have designers on contract with them to create the templates.

@kittyd - Thanks for the reply and offering to point me in the right direction if you recognize the template or the designer.

Here is the template in question, a Zencart template. I quickly found this template on 3 different template sites:

    1. TemplateMonster.com - ZenCart template #29256 by Delta

    2. TemplateHelp.com - Shopping Cart

    3. Nice-Layouts.com - Nice Layouts Website Templates | Template : #29256

Any ideas where they are getting it from? Or do you think these are Template Monster affiliate shops?

    Thank you so much!!!

I think that number (#29256) that showed up when I posted the link just answered the question. :-)

$120+ is a lot for a template! Geesh!

    Hi Brandon,

hehe, true - the answer became obvious. as i just mentioned, on the afiliate sites, the TemplateMonster templates numbers get to be keept one way or another.
And also, indeed, your #2 & #3 are both Template Monster Templates. And TM has its own designers. They are the ones that distribute them, as oposed to being the kind of shop that gathers from everywhere.

Indeed, 130 for a template is not very affordable. However, the TM price is also about "unicity".... they tell you the number of downloads each template has.
having just 2 downloads means that will be pretty hard to find another website that looks just like yours. Thay are rare...

    Item number: 29256
    Type: Zen-Cart 1.3.9
    Author: Delta
    Downloads: 2

from another point of view, this specific template... is not very complicated.
you might find a freelancer tweaking the basic Zencart template to looking like this one for less.

    Good luck!

Thanks for your reply kittyd. I think I'll try to tweak an existing template myself. I already started actually, but I hit a few sniggs and got frustrated. But I think I will continue.

    Thanks for the insight. ;-)
