Hi everyone,

I need some advice for a graphic design course that will allow my sister to get into graphic design with a marketing angle. She has done a very basic InDesign course, but I am a freelance writer and I am looking at partnering with her so I can offer clients a complete solution - copy plus design of brochures, newsletters etc.

We are UK based, and want your advice on the best online course available.
Thanks for your time!
kind regards
Arfa

If you are going for strickly online, then I would look into Full Sail University Online Degrees

They are one of the most reputable schools that I can think of....

Here are a link of their programs, they are NOT cheap at all.......
    Full Sail University Online Degrees

I have friends who have gone there, to their actual campus in Florida, but not for Graphic Design, they went for audio engineering...

Here is their Graphic Design Page... http://online.fullsail.edu/degrees/g...sign-bachelors

You don't need to do a course to go freelance. As long as you have the skills, find the work and impress the clients you have it cracked.

I'm a freelance web developer and I haven't took any courses, I'm just self taught.

To get more of an insight, go through the blog archives on vandelaydesign.com/blog/

They have a lot of information on freelancing in the graphic/web design field.

I agree that you do not need a formal education for freelancing, but you do need a kick-ass portfolio, and in order to do that you have to either spend lots of time training yourself and then buidling a it from odd jobs or speed up the process with formal training, maybe try a local community college IF and ONLY IF, they have a good reputation for turning out graphic design students who get hired.

(of course you still have to build a portfolio with formal training, but you do it with the aid of seasoned professionals helping you put it together)

Out local community college works with many of the local printing companies, graphic design and marketing firms, as a matter of fact the local business helped shape the curriculam for out community college, so they can hire students straight out of a 2 year degree.

This way they know that they are learning the latest industry standards and needs....

If you need help with building a quality portfolio, I would suggest gaining experience by designing stuff such as business cards, brochures, websites and a lot more for family, friends, your local church and schools.

Once you feel more confident with your work, advertise yourself on freelancing websites such as elance.com or peopleperhour.com

Ryan told you the best way to get started. Start with small jobs, get permission to use them as referals, build a portfoloi at the same time you are going to school. The more you do this, the more comfortable you get with it, and the juices get flowing and the creativeness will just ooze out into your work. Jumping in with both feet it's called.
