I know html is a markup language and not a coding language, but asking "are you a fluent markup linguists?" is a tad too nerdy.

From reading around this forum wordpress seems to be hugely popular, but do many of you good folk actually create your website from scratch?

I create most of my projects from scratch. I have created a generic content management system though for large projects to speed up the development process. I tend to stay away from pre-made/pre-packaged software because of security issues which arise from using them. My train of thought basically is, if I can't break it or exploit it than 90% of everyone else will not be able to either...and that ratio is better than what you are risking with using mass-used scripts like WordPress. Although, don't get me wrong, I love WordPress and it's great for basic websites and blogs...but just remember that by using software like it you are risking security issues.

I have the ability to create a web site from scratch, being a developer for several years, but I'm too lazy too do any of that stuff anymore for my own projects.

When putting sites together for my projects, I try to avoid coding as much as possible, mostly just modifying wordpress themes to get them to work exactly as I want, and even then with all the new advancements in Wordpress lately I rarely have to do that anymore to the extent that I used to

I first found when getting into Internet marketing that my coding skills were a hinderance to my progress cause I would spend a lot of time worrying about trying to code everything myself rather than work on what actually would make me money. Now I spend as little time as possible on site development, using mostly Wordpress, and focus more on writing content and SEO

yep...I totally relate to this. WordPress has been a game-changer for me too. It's great not having to spend as much time on code.

  • I am getting my degree in Web Design and Development followed by a Masters in Internet Marketing. I program from scratch in XHTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, etc etc. and use platforms such as WordPress and Concrete5 for both my own projects and for client projects. I will say that I definitely fall into the 'Mechanic's car always needs work' syndrome though! LOL... I am just now getting around to reskining my webhosting and development site located in my signature and have had the site up for months providing hosting services to my clients... finally a big make over in the next couple of days though.

Anyway, I love to do dev work for clients... hint hint... ;o)
