Article leeching for backlinks

I was wondering if I commented on an article and posted my link in the comment so I can get a backlink, how much would that be worth compare to writing the article myself and putting my link in the resource box?

Also, how much would it be worth to comment on a blog page instead of exchanging links with the blog.

    Your article comment, if it is no-follow, will not be as effective in your backlink strategy as your do-follow links in your resource box. Ditto with blog commenting.

    There are Firefox plugins, like NoDoFollow that can help you identify the follow status of your posted links.

    A combination of article submissions and blog/article/forum commenting will give you a diversity of backlinks, and look more natural.
