Doing a "test" site? Staring up a site question

So when your starting up a site, specifically a wordpress site, what's the best way to make a "test" site?

It wouldn't be to do a subdomain and then copy the folder to your real domain when you want it to go live? that would possibly count as duplicate content and seen as bad in googles eyes?

Specifically using wordpress, with the host "justhost".

Ideas, thoughts?

Guess I can robots.txt. That and leave URL dynamic until I copy it to root domain should work.

I usually develop everything locally and then upload when its ready.

But I guess you could create a test.yourdomain.com instance.

Then just edit your robot.txt so that google doesn't index that one.

Can't you just upload all the files later?

Yeah but I want to be able to view it "live" as I update it/change things... wasn't sure exactly how to do that besides making a test domain.

You should create a test wp install on any server and buikd the site there. When done, export the posts, pages, widgets etc using the built in export feature in wp. Then do a fresh install of wp on the live server, upload the theme, install plugins, and import the test wp xml that was created from the export.

So how exactly does one do that then?

A test WP install that is?

Also does the export export all of my images as well?

Test install meaning a full wp install on a test server, anywhere that you have space to test soyou can view it live.

        Images get exportes too.

Great... that's basically what I'm doing.

I don't use this server for anything else so it won't hurt anything.

I appreciate the help as usual folks.... I'll throw in a disallow to * when I get home today

Just use WordPress › Custom Coming Soon Page WordPress Plugins. It will display a coming soon page to non logged users, but you or any other logged users will see the site as you work on it.
