Images on blog posts

Hey All

I'm new to wordpress having only made one site. I'm experiencing a little problem with my blog page

the page shows a small 3 line excerpt from the latest 5 posts

I would like it to show 8-10 lines of each and a small image in the top left corner.

Is this a general setting or is it template specific?
