I think I have a canonical issue going on on my site, and I want to try and fix it. But I'm a bit confused...

I've been doing a bit of research on it, and I think I need to install a .htaccess file. I have no idea how to do this...

Though, perhaps I can just use 301 redirect? I don't know how to do this either though...

So I was wondering if anyone can advise which is easier, or better to do... and how I do it...

Or, is there a wordpress plugin that can do it for me?

Any info is appreciated, thanks.

If you have custom permalinks set up on your Wordpress site, you probably already have an .htaccess file. To set up a 301 redirect manually, you would normally place rewrite rules in this file. However, you can use the Redirection plugin to handle redirects entirely from within Wordpress.

Thanks for the advice MrMagos! I checked that plugin out... but the consensus on the plugin page is that it doesn't work... 'it's broken'. Have you installed it and gotten it working ok?

I did check my files for an .htaccess file, but on the template that I am using, there doesn't seem to be one there!

I know I've had one on other templates... so not sure why this one doesn't have one.

It won't be in the templates, it wili be in the WordPress root drectory where the wp-admin, wp-includes, wp-content directories are.

I have it installed on one of my sites and it works fine for me. I have seen issues with it on other sites, but that has mainly been due to a misunderstanding on how the plugin works i.e. user error.

The .htaccess file will be hidden on a web server (typically). If you're using the file manager in cpanel, make sure to check the box to view hidden (dotfiles).
