It's suppose to help visitors navigate around your site in the earlier days of dot com boom but it end up not much human surfers really understand why it's there.

For non human side of it, it's meant to help crawler or spider from search engines to index all the pages properly in a site. Just in case some of the page is not index when it is suppose to.

Seem like its an optional thing now that the spider are very efficient in finding all pages even without sitemap.

But the crawlers still like to see site maps. Despite the fact that they have grown very advanced, there's still something sympathetic about them that they like to see sitemaps, I suppose.

There are two main reasons to have a sitemap:
    1) it is easy for search engines for indexing all the pages
    2) its easy for the user to navigate the website...if the user is unable to find any particular link on a website, he/she can just go to the sitemap and navigate thru the list of all the links

These days there are free sitemap gnerators also incase you need to generate one. You may do a quick google search to find one.

I agree with you about the first point! But in my case, I never ever have used the sitemap link to navigate through a certain web site. That's why the menus are for.
