I was recently helped by a WF member who transfered the domain
healthandfitnessmagazine.net to my GoDaddy account. He gave me a
a link to healthandfitnessmagazine.net/cpanel with a login name and password. I need to know how I should develope this site. I have no content and no experience in designing a web page. I have recently started a blogger account rying to get my feet wet in IM but that was easy using there templates and easy ways to add gadgets and things.
My question is how can I develope this killer domain that was given to me
and get it up and running making me some money?

So, if you have everything set up (hosting and domain), you now have to start developing your site.

You can go for a Squeeze Page, but for that domain (magazine) I think that a blog fits better. You should install Wordpress (there should be an automatic script installer at your CPanel account. Use it to install Wordpress if you don't know how to install manually). After installing Wordpress, search for some good free theme (or pay for one, if you are willing to) and install it.

You should also install the basic plugins (search and you'll find the ones that you need to install).

After you have everything, you have to write some content and start promoting your site.

There are plenty of different ways to promote a website, both free and paid.

You've came to the right place to find for information. Just navigate around and you'll find everything you need.

    Good Luck!

You definitely need to have a CMS system that you find easy to use so that you don't get bogged down with too much technical stuff and can concentrate on creating your content.

I personally prefer Joomla for all my sites since it is scalable from a blogg site up to a huge enteprise site. Amongst other things, you can set modules to show up on specific pages too which will help with very targeted marketing campaigns.

I also recently found this great free browser toolbar that has some great information finding links built in. I can't post links here yet but it is at: SerotoninInspiration [dot] OurToolbar [dot] com.
I use the Inspiration menu to find trends, similar sites and demographic info before I spend the time to write the content. They seem to be expanding the toobar every few days so there might be some other links that suite you better. You have to find the hungry fish before you bait your fishing rod appropriately. The content on your site needs to speak to specific people so you need to research who they are and what it is they are looking for THEN provide them with the relevant content. Think about what your visitors are going to do on your site. Will they read, interact, purchase etc. Then craft the user experience or user journey.

GoDaddy has scripts to install the cms you choose. From there find a nice template and start producing your content based on your research. Remember that with cms's, the template can be changed with a few clicks of your mouse but your content is king.

    Good Luck!!

I thought godaddy made installing Wordpress more complicated than it should be, but if you do have cPanel access, look for a link called "fantastico" or something similar.

That should lead you to a page where you can install different scripts (programs) with one-click, and wordpress should be one of them (make sure at least version 3.0 is available) and then follow the instructions to install wordpress.

(might also try googling something like "install wordpress godaddy" and I'm sure you'll find some articles or videos to help)

Same goes for wordpress - godaddy and other webhosts have many "getting started" types of tutorials available or if you google or search on youtube you'll find plenty of tutorials.

That'll all get you started, but be prepared to invest some time learning how things work and how to add content to your site etc...

Please do not use fantastico - sometimes it does not install the latest version, which leaves your site open to atacks.

And by using fantastico, your not learning anything.

        CMS = Content Management System

It usually uses php scripting and a database to hold your data. This makes the site more flexible then a static hand coded site.

If you plan on adding content on a regular basis, a CMS is the way to go.

Wordpress is an example of a database driven CMS, and its one of the most popular ones going right now.

Another example of a CMS is Drupal.

The forum that we are on right now is another example of a database drive content management system. When you make a post, the information goes into a database on the server.

        Hi Jamie,
A CMS is a Content Management System. Joomla, Drupal and Wordpress are all CMS' but there are many others. Those three are just very popular because they deliver a good and reliable end product. A CMS is a program that you install at your host. Once installed you can edit your website securely from any internet enabled computer and some smartphones.

It basically puts the power in your hands so you don't have to call a webdesigner everytime you need to add or change text/images. It also gives you the ability to build your site at your own pace, that way you don't have to outlay cash to start with x number of pages, you can start with one page while you "learn to walk".

Depending on how quickly you want to get started you might want to invest in getting some personal one on one online training from . That way you can get to the "good stuff" quicker.

Steve explained how to find fantastico in your control panel, use it or contact GoDaddy support if you have problems. There is a lot of help out there If you seek it out.

In my personal opinion I would use Joomla for a magazine type site since I feel it is more flexible than Wordpress and has more components (applications) that you can install afterwards to give your site real power.

        Content management system.
        Joomla
        Drupal etc
If you have an icon in your cpanel called fantastico then just check in there for Joomla 1.5. Click it to set it up. Takes five minutes and is fully automatic. Take note of the information at the end of the setup which will tell you how to login to your admin section and your up and running.
With Joomla you can make almost any type of website.
        Have some fun with it!!!

the OP just found CPanel... he doesnt need the crazy complex nature of joomla... he needs the basic walk through of wordpress!

Or OP ... if you have extra time.. i fully recommend learning html yourself.. and making your own site... it will be an investment for a time.. but in the longer run your teaching yourself a very valuable skill!

You're probably right about this, but the fact is he gave it to me. He must not have had the time to do anything with it and thought he would help out a newbie like myself and like we all were at one time. I just feel like with this domain name I have a real opportunity to make something of it and I want to do it right and have it be a highly profitable site. Maybe one of you would like to team up and develope the site with me? Just a thought.

        Hi,

I am the one who donated the domain, took a look at what he had done on his blog , saw that he was into fitness , so did some keyword research and found a name with a broad enough appeal to the fitness niche and a fair amount of searches and registered it. I have no doubt that if Henry manage to get this domain on top of Google for the domain key word , he will be getting a good trickle of traffic.

Now I also gave Henry some advice, nothing wrong of him seeking more advice , especially because I am not the end all and be all of marketing and web creation knowledge.

However, I am a bit disappointed.

You are 3 click away from installing word press from the cpannel via fantastico

I recommended that you join (not affiliate): Resell Rights Weekly :: Free Private Label Rights Products

Why, because you could find a huge amount of tutorials, content and marketing advice to get your site started...If you are broke , just join the for a month, you will have plenty of time to download everything you could possibly ever need to get started. If you where relly broke, just join for the trial and then cancel.

        It's been what , two , three weeks , now...and nothing?

C'mon , Henry, it's not like I am asking for you to crawl in the mud under Barb wire shouting rude things at you

by all mean, plan, get a vision of what you want to do , but you got to take the plunge some time...

    *** ONLY MY OPINION ***

I will recommend you using Joomla first and then Wordpress.

Joomla in my personal opinion is more flexible on the Template Customization than Wordpress and both of these CMS Systems are good in the SEO if you know how to appropriate install everything.

Wordpress will be better on the SEO out of the box but Joomla can reach Wordpress very quickly if you know how to do SEO things.

Wordpress is an excellent blogging tool and that is how I see it.

I could not disagree more - joomla is not the way to go, regardless of your level of experience.

The joomla support forums are a nightmare - request for support are ignored, the support forums are not very well moderated, as in making the information easy to find. And worst of all, a couple of years ago, the main joomla site had downloads listed that had known security issues. Its like the joomla developers want to offer a lot of add-ons, regardless of how secure they are.

The joomla leadership changes hands from time to time. This makes the project steer in different directions.

And lets not forget the GPL license blow up from a few years ago - where the joomla developers did not want commercial software connected to joomla.

I would not recommend Joomla to a newbie. It is only end user friendly if you are an experienced web designer.
If someone has to ask "what is a CMS?" then Joomla is wrong for them because the learning curve is too great.
I would recommend WordPress to a newbie because its admin backend is simple, straightforward and they will have a very professional looking website that they can manage themselves in a short space of time.

I have been using Cpanel for a bit, and at first I used the RVsitebuilder in programs section. It takes time if you have a slow connection.
Building a basic site can be as simple as creating a document on open office, then uploading it. I tried many different platforms, figure out ONE IDE (Intergrated Development Enviornment) and learn how to tweak your site as much as possible.
I can rembember when I first started learning about sites, and it can be hard, just stick to it.
It looks like you have a database installed, no index. I know CPanel has Video tutorials, (so does RV sitebuilder).
I now think I will try to install a blog, or Joomla on my site, I have before (Word press, through Fantastico), I just did not take the time to refine it.
    Dont Give up!!!!

There has been a lot of advice given here. Some good and some not so good. I have been thru the same dilemma and I can tell you from that experience that information overload is very real for a newb trying to learn this IM stuff. There are too many directions that can take you into the twilight zone.

I have used WP and have actually built two sites with it and found that it was a fairly simple process once you pick up on the lingo.

    IMHO
It is real obvious that jthenry55 is at the same point that I was and wouldnt be here asking for advice is he understood fully what he was doing. With that being said I think that the question would be "What would be the easiest route for someone that dosent know what CMS means, to take to accomplish his end goal?"

I would definitely recommend to go with wordpress unless they have the time for a major learning curve.

Good luck to you. I would throw a vote in for Wordpress. I have only moderate knowledge of Dreamweaver and HTML and it took me about 1/3 of the time to build a webpage with Wordpress than with html and finding php code online.

Gary223 is right though, without the basics of html you won't be able to go into the code to tweak add-ons and templates easily. Just follow the instructions on how to install wordpress and let GOOGLE help you along the way, just make sure to get started.
