Headache while switching hosting over, details lost, pages not loading etc...

Hi, thanks for taking for time.

I'm changing hosting from ChrisFarrellMembership to Hostgator, leaving his site because I don't think it's worth the money any more.

Anyway, I'm trying out a website cloning list building system and have decided to get a reseller account with Hostgator. I've created private DNS for it but haven't pointed any of my websites at them yet.

I'm really confused about what to do now with the change over process. Here's the situation:

My new project site on the list building system is pointed at hostgator's servers and works. Several other sites are still pointed at ChrisFarrell hosting, one primary domain and three addon domains.

So now I have three types of hosting, what do I need to do next? I'm new to this, and this is annoying and confusing. People say upload to the new host, but how exactly in an FTP client? Do I download to my PC then reupload?

Thanks then.

When transferring websites to new hosting it is always good practise to download and save a copy to your pc - just incase anything goes wrong.

So make a folder for each site on your pc and then using your ftp program download the contents of each site to their folder.

Then complete your hosting transfer, changing the TAG and nameservers etc. safe in the knowledge that you have a copy of your websites to reload.

    IndigoJack has good points.
    Some other pointers:
    Database backups are important too.
Some control panels will let you zip the entire folder and download it as a single file. this is good as the ZIP checksum will tell you if the file was corrupted when you extract from it.
Adjust the TTL (time to live) on the domain names down to 1 hour a couple of days before you move the sites, then you will have much less crossover timeouts for people with the old DNS information.

Don't forget you will probably need to adjust a whole bunch of configuration like folder names, database connections and login details.
