When you backup the files on the server to your home computer, how do you organize those files?

Lets say you have a drive on your computer dedicated to just website stuff, with a folder for each site,,,, but then what? Do you make a folder for every month you backup your sites, would you label the month and day?

What if your running a content management system, how do you store your themes, plugins,,,, modifications.

The problem I'am having is organizing all of my backup files so their easy to find. I have a folder for wordpress, with every recent version under it, then the modifications.

Then there are the vbulletin files for my forum. I download a lot of mods, look at them, then I may or may not install them. So I have tons of themes, and modifications that I might want to hang on to, but their just taking up room.

Lets take a wordpress theme for example - I might edit it one way for one site, and another way for another site - so that leaves me with 3 versions of the same theme: The original, site A and site B.

I just moved over to using Backup Buddy and my initial experience has been very good. However, prior to that I was backing up database and system files separately.

I have a folder on my PC for each site I'm running and both are always in sync. The benefit of that is that if I need to restore I can simply grab the entire folder and upload it, so I can be back up and running in however long the upload takes.

I only keep the latest back up of system files, but my databases go back 3 back ups on my PC, and to day 1 on my back up drive.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

How does that work with large sites? I run a forum with over 1.9 million post, and the members have uploaded over 10,000 attachments. Just the database alone is over 2 gigs. The entire site is somewhere around 13 - 14 gigs.

My wordpress blog on the other hand is maybe 50 megs. I could see keeping 50 - 100 megs of data in sync. But when it comes to sync'ing gigs of data, what then?

There should be a compress facility available to you?

I back up to dated file folders that then have internal folders for all the different activities or sites whatever.

Then, because I'm really paranoid I save the lot to memory stick or cd/dvd.

for mysql I go with phpmysqlautobackup, and run it as a cron once a day in a protected folder, sending the compressed db as attachment to a mail
ftp I bakup manually for now, as I have not so much stuff to backup daily
