HTML 5 has a really good chance of replacing flash by the fact that flash is not viewable on iphone or ipad. People won't stop building with flash but there will be a huge swing to the HTML 5 side of the plate once IE9 is becomes wide spread.

You have to be aware that right now the iphone and ipad are play callers....especially in the IM arena. If you are not marketing to the mobile crowd already then you are going to miss the boat and be playing catchup for the next couple of years.

The biggest advantage the flash has right now is that is supported by older browsers while HTML 5 is not. The biggest offender is IE7 and IE8 which only play flash. also there is still a substantial number IE6 (worst browser possible) users out there.

However, as I mentioned before, the new IE9 is a much more web compliant browser and very comparable to firefox, chrome, opera and safari which already support HTML 5.

When designing a website and insuring that your product and squeeze pages are viewed to the larges number of people it is important to know your demographics and be sure you design for largest number of people. Although I have given up on IE6 since it has become such a royal pain in the arse to get thing to work.

I have high hopes for HTML5. I don't know much about using
it yet, and I'm pretty used to working with flash, so HTML5
will be something I'll have to adapt to, but from what I'm reading
it's a really big step forward.

I can't think of a single interloper that has completely wiped out the previously dominant programme.

it is really difficult to adapt to a totally new technology like html 5 but once people will get accustomed to it they would certainly find it equally beneficial and even better in some aspects. it would not completely takeover flash as it has its own exclusive usage.

HTML5 won't replace Flash. They are very very different. HTML5 introduces some great features but Flash ActionScript 3 is a full blown programming language with so many features that HTML5 can't contend with.

HTML5, once widely adopted and supported, can replace some of the uses of Flash. For example, embedding video in a page.

Remember that Flash can be used to create full blown animated movies. HTML5 doesn't even try to do this.
