Is site and blog on same domain good for seo

Hi, I have a site at mydomain.com. I was going to put a wordpress blog to promote that site on another domain name, but a couple of warriors in here told me to put it on the same domain. I did not even know you could do that, but I did it.

So now I have mydomain.com and mydomain.com/blog both using the same domain name.

My question is, is this good for seo reasons, and does google see the sites as one or two different sites. The reason I ask is, the main site is basically done, and probably won't change much. When I post to the blog, which I will a couple times a week, will the search engines see that as fresh content on the main site, or just the blog.

The reason I am curious is because if they don't see it as fresh content for the main site, then I will make the effort to make changes there occasionally.

Thanks Glenn

Hi Glenn, you'll be fine, I use this method on the site in my sig where I've got static html pages, a blog, currently re-skinning a review script that'll also go on there and at a later date a directory.

Basically Google will only see the blog as more pages on mydomain.com nothing else, not a seperate site. To boot if people start linking to posts in your blog you'll also gain yourself some nice deep links into your site.

I have only 1 suggestion for you: instead of worrying about all these things, start writing content that people would love to read.

    1. Global Movies Database = $489.95 = 1.5 GB data + 65.9 GB images.

    2. World Hotels Database = $589.95 = 1.54 GB data + 71.4 GB images.

    3. Auto Parts Database = $489.95 = 15.8 GB data + 30.4 GB images.

This may seem like a rather dumb question but how does one do this?

You can do this with any ftp program. Start by logging into your website via ftp program and find the public_html folder. This is where your website information goes including files, directories, subdirectories etc. You would create a new directory by creating a new folder. Rename that folder blog for example. This is where your blog template and all your blog posts would reside.

Definitely, as blog helps produce fresh content which search engines love.

Running a blog along with your regular website is a great idea. Try to customize the blog theme so that it blends in with or compliments your main site design.

  • If you have your own domain name and hosting account, you can put as many different things on there as your space allows.
It works just like your computer. ( except that everything online is case sensitive and you can't use spaces in folder or file names. )

    you have folders

and then you have files within those folders

each thing like a blog or a bulletin board etc. would have it's own folder.
then inside that folder go all the files for that program/script.

    so, you could have;

    yourdomain.com/homepage
    yourdomain.com/blog
    yourdomain.com/forum
    yourdomain.com/whatever

as said above, you manage this by using a ftp program to access your hosting account.

you find your web root ( usually something like public_html, or htdocs or www) folder.

then, you create a new folder with the name of whatever you need and upload the files for that program to that folder.

many programs have their own folder so you can just drag and drop the complete folder.

for example, if you want to install a bulletin board like phpbb.
you open your ftp program and connect to your server.
on the left side will be the list of files on your computer.
on the right side will be the list of folders/files on your server.

find the phpBB3 folder on the left side.
on the right side, make sure you are inside that web root we discussed earlier.

now, simply drag the phpbb3 folder over to the right side and drop it.
it will copy all the files and folders into their proper place on your server.

(There is more to installing phpbb than just moving the files, but that is another topic.)

    Ok, what you will now have is;
    yourdomain.com/phpBB3

and once you have installed it, you would access your new board by typing that into your browser and poof, you have it.

    hope this helps out .
