I need some design advice

My site, the one in my signature, is doing really well in terms of growth, usability, interactivity, traffic, etc. However, I simply get sick of looking at it sometimes, since it is just SO plain.

I try to put myself in the position of someone who has never visited my site before, and I wonder if they would have any idea what the site even is.

What do you think I can do to improve the design? Maybe some images under navbar that explain the site (similar to infobarrel)? Should I place the "latest submissions" in a widget style box on the homepage? Maybe I should incorporate a colorful image for the background of the site, and make the page "scroll" free except on search and content pages? What do you think? I don't want to do anything that is going to use a lot of space or affect my loading speed too much.

I am working on some code that is going to make sharing info, in my opinion, different than any other site. The submission process and layout are the only things my site still has in common with other pligg-based sites, and aside from that, I have built and incorporated several features that no one else using pligg (that I'm aware of) has. Now I just need a nice layout, but have no idea where to begin!

You top navigation text doesn't fit with me. I don't like the all-white rollover - seems disruptive. Instead, brighten it up (both the background and the text). Use a better rollover - like changing the font color, adding an underline, that sort of thing.

Also, one piece of usability, is to put a "What is Seekyt" in the header below the navigation. I see you have it in your sidebar, but only spotted it after several minutes of trying to figure the function of the site out. Perhaps if you are better at educating your visitors they'll be more apt to use your site.

    Thank you Avid,

I will definitely change the navigation back to different font color with underline.

Underneath the logo is a tagline which says "Social Bookmarking, Writing Articles, and Getting Paid To Do It," and just as I feared, you didn't even notice it. The problem that I have with it is that when I increase the text to H1, or even just Strong, for some reason the tags show up in Google and other sites. Even when I style them in the CSS file, the search engines show the <h1> or <strong> tags. I'm not sure why.

Anyway, I will spice it up by putting some content in the header, and change the navigation bar back to its previous setting. Thanks for your input.

    So far, I have
    • changed the navigation "on hover" background from absolute white to a nice blue or purple (I'm colorblind, so I have no idea)
    • moved the "What is Seekyt" to the top of the sidebar, just underneath the newly repositioned "Login" box
    • ditched the sidebar ads in favor of between-content ads
    • changed each story page to an uglier "in-content" ad position, but to increase CTR for both myself and website members
    • decreased the vertical space on the list pages to keep most content above the fold
    • removed the gray background around the content due to varying content position
    • and changed the position of thumbnails from story content to just beside the title (where applicable).

To Do: Images with descriptions either in the Header or just below the navbar which explain the site in better detail (i.e. "Step 1: Submit and Create Content" "Step 2: Make Money" "Step 3: refer your friends and make more money").

Does anyone else have any other simple ideas to improve the existing design? I appreciate your advice!

Thanks for the input, Chris. Those 2 cents might be worth a lot more to me in the long run.

I'm still working on a fix, although the white will probably remain for a while.
