Why are excellent websites a turn off?

Why are excellent websites a turn off and don't convert as well as ordinary looking ones? By excellent, I mean those that are beautifully designed/look fancy?

    Don't kid yourself. Good looking sites do convert. The reason good looking sites do not convert is due to the content, wrong keywords, wrong traffic, not SEOd properly.) In other words, the people arrived on the site by mistake. There is a lot of work that needs to be done to a website besides just making it look good.

    i agree with zeekstern-- zigato, could do you have analytics data to support your statement? Maybe we could help troubleshoot problems with the "nice looking site" -- good design does convert better in my experience.

    Excellent looking websites in who's opinion? One person's caviar is another's manure.

    There are some hugely successful BUG UGLY websites out there. They are successful because of their content, not how pretty they are.

      There are many websites which provide the best to there clients,some charge more and some less but provide best quality.I had convert many good websites themes and my experienced is good.

    All this is just opinion without some split test data. (speaking of which, I highly recommend the blog ABtests.com - Share A/B Testing Results. Improve your conversion today. )

    Now, I certainly do see the potential for a site to be OVER-designed... somebody gone mad with the power of Photoshop effects ruining an otherwise good website. That sort of clutter would certainly have a negative effect on clarity of the message.
